Crump told Lemon that his investigation is still in the very early stages and he doesn’t yet know if they will find signs of foul play. He added that the Sheriff’s Office has not yet told the family whether they suspect foul play.
“We don’t have any information at this time that would lead us to believe a crime occurred,” Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter told ABC News earlier this week.
He added that the family was concerned about “inconsistencies,” including deleted text messages from Wells’ phone.
According to Crump, Wells participated in a Division I workout on Monday. He is reportedly avoiding substances that could affect his performance. His family said he was an excellent athlete and swimmer.
Ledbetter said the investigation is ongoing. TMZ reports that the Sheriff’s Office is investigating a video shared on social media that appears to show people getting into an argument on Horn Island over the holidays. Video showed crowds of people on the beach, but it was unclear whether it was related to the case.
Crump and his legal team are planning an independent review and have pledged to press for the “timely release of all records, witness statements and autopsy results.”
