British woman claims she gave birth to rabbit, and Britain's most respected doctor believes every word: The story of history's biggest medical scam

In the autumn of 1726, an extraordinary claim swept England, perplexing even some of its most respected doctors. A poor Surrey woman named Mary Toft insisted that she had given birth not to a baby but to a rabbit. The bizarre story soon spread throughout her village, attracting the attention of surgeons, scientists, and even King George I. For weeks, several prominent doctors treated the case as if it were true, then careful investigation uncovered one of the most egregious cases of medical fraud in history, exposing the dangers of superstition, flawed science and professional pride.

How a poor woman convinced doctors she gave birth to a rabbit

The woman at the center of the scandal was Mary Toft, a poor resident of Godalming, who had given birth to a child before suffering a miscarriage in August 1726. Soon after, she began claiming she was in labor again, but witnesses said she gave birth not to a baby but to rabbit parts and other animal remains. Local surgeon John Howard examined her and was convinced the birth was genuine, recording what he believed to be a repeat birth of the rabbit. His reporting quickly spread beyond Surrey, turning an incredible local story into a national sensation.

Why doctors believe the impossible

Although these claims may sound ridiculous today, they seemed to make sense to many doctors due to the medical theories of the time. A widely accepted belief, the mother’s imagination, suggests that a pregnant woman’s emotions, fears, or experiences may affect her unborn child. Mary reportedly claimed she became obsessed with rabbits after being frightened by one during her pregnancy. Many doctors accepted this explanation, arguing that it could explain unusual births despite the lack of scientific evidence.

Case reaches the royal family

As word of the rabbit’s birth spread, the story reached King George I, who ordered a formal investigation. The royal surgeon, Nathaniel St. Andre, examined Mary and declared the birth to be genuine, even publishing a pamphlet defending the remarkable case. However, another royal surgeon, Cyriacus Ahlers, noticed inconsistencies in the animal remains suggesting they had lived outside the womb before being used as evidence, but remained sceptical.

Clues that reveal the scam

As investigators looked closer, the evidence began to fall apart. Rabbits contain straw and partially digested grains, which would not be possible if they were developing in humans. Some organs had clean cuts, not injuries from childbirth. Investigators also discovered that Mary’s husband had been buying rabbits, and a porter later admitted that he had been bribed to smuggle rabbits into her room during the investigation. Together, these findings suggest that rabbit births are carefully planned.

Confessions of Mary Toft

Faced with relentless questioning and the threat of invasive surgery to uncover the truth, Mary confessed in December 1726. She admitted that parts of dead rabbits were inserted into her body to create the illusion that the birth was impossible. Historians believe she may have had help in the early stages of the deception, although the identities and roles of the accomplices remain uncertain. Her guilty plea brings an abrupt end to one of the most unusual health care fraud cases in history.

The scandal that ruined Britain’s medical experts

The fallout from this scam fell primarily on the doctors who supported Mary. Nathaniel St. André’s reputation plummeted after he publicly defended his claims, and John Howard faced widespread criticism. By contrast, skeptics such as Sir Richard Manningham and Cyriacus Allers who questioned the evidence largely retained their professional status. The scandal inspired satirical pamphlets, newspaper reports and artwork by William Hogarth, making the incident one of Britain’s greatest public embarrassments.Nearly three centuries later, the Mary Toft affair continues to fascinate historians because it highlights how respected experts can be misled when accepted beliefs trump closer observation. The scandal exposed the weaknesses of eighteenth-century medicine, demonstrated the dangers of confirmation bias, and underscored the importance of evidence-based investigation. Today, it remains one of the most high-profile examples of medical fraud in history, reminding us that extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.
