An Abu Dhabi court has handed down a harsh sentence to a driver whose dangerous behavior on public roads endangered the lives of other motorists. Reckless driving in Abu Dhabi
The Abu Dhabi Prosecution Authority said that investigations revealed that the driver deliberately swerved multiple times while driving on public roads and performed dangerous maneuvers, endangering his own life and the safety of other road users.The reckless driving incident was discovered by authorities, who arrested the motorist and referred him to the Public Prosecution Service. The case was then fast-tracked to the Crown Court.During the trial, prosecutors relied on evidence including police reports, investigative records, technical findings and surveillance video documenting the driver’s dangerous behavior. After reviewing the evidence, the court found that the charges were established and ruled that the defendant intentionally committed acts that seriously threatened public safety.
Driver jailed for Dh70,000
In addition to a six-month jail term, the court also imposed a fine of Dh50,000 for reckless driving. It also ordered the driver to pay Dh20,000, equivalent to the assessed value of the vehicle used during the crime, as the vehicle belonged to someone else and could not be confiscated under applicable legal provisions.The court further ruled that the driving license would be suspended for one year, effective upon completion of the sentence.All told, the ruling means the offenders will serve jail time, pay fines totaling Dh70,000 and be banned from driving for a year after their release.
