As Venezuelan rescue teams race against time to find survivors under collapsed buildings, the United Arab Emirates has stepped up to the plate with an emergency humanitarian package worth Dh10 million to support relief efforts in the stricken country. The funding was approved under the directives of His Highness the President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, underscoring the UAE’s long-standing commitment to provide rapid humanitarian assistance during global emergencies. The news comes as Venezuela struggles to recover from two powerful earthquakes of magnitude 7.2 and 7.5 that struck within seconds of each other on June 24, leveling communities, damaging critical infrastructure and triggering one of the country’s worst natural disasters in more than a century. The official death toll has risen to more than 920 people, with more than 3,300 people injured. Thousands of people remain displaced, hundreds are believed to be trapped under collapsed buildings, and authorities estimate tens of thousands remain unaccounted for as rescue operations continue.

UAE provides Dh10 million in humanitarian support

The UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) announced emergency aid.The ministry said in an official statement that the financial support was allocated in accordance with the directives of His Highness President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to help people affected by the devastating earthquake. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the UAE “expresses solidarity with the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela and its people” following the disaster and reaffirmed the country’s commitment to providing humanitarian assistance to communities affected by natural disasters around the world. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also expressed its sincere condolences to the families of the victims and wished all injured a speedy recovery.

Earthquake puts Venezuela in trouble

The disaster erupted when two powerful earthquakes struck northern Venezuela seconds apart, with the coastal state of La Guaira suffering the worst damage.Entire apartment blocks, hotels and public buildings collapsed, and there was widespread damage to roads, hospitals and utility networks. Lacking heavy rescue equipment, rescuers, volunteers and local residents have been digging through mountains of debris in search of survivors, often using only basic tools.Thousands of families have been forced from their homes and temporary shelters have been set up in affected areas, authorities said. International search and rescue teams and humanitarian agencies have also begun arriving to support local efforts as aftershocks continue to hamper operations.

UAE strengthens humanitarian leadership

The Venezuela rescue plan is the latest example of the UAE’s proactive humanitarian diplomacy.Over the years, China has responded to earthquakes, floods, conflicts and other humanitarian emergencies in Asia, Africa, Europe and the Americas with emergency funds, relief supplies, medical assistance and reconstruction support.Officials said humanitarian action remains a core pillar of the UAE’s foreign policy, guided by the values of solidarity, compassion and international cooperation.By approving Dh10 million in emergency aid to Venezuela, President Sheikh Mohammed once again reinforced the UAE’s commitment to stand with countries facing humanitarian crises, regardless of distance or geography. As search operations continue and humanitarian casualties increase, the UAE’s donation is expected to support emergency relief efforts and help affected communities begin the long process of recovery.
