New Delhi: Former Assam congress Chief Bhupen Kumar Borah has resigned from the party ahead of the upcoming elections in the state. In his letter to Congress, he claimed that he was “ignored” by the party leadership and was not given due treatment in the state unit.“I submitted my resignation to the Congress high command at 8 am today and explained in detail why I was forced to take this stand. It was not my personal decision. I have dedicated 32 years to the party and joined it in 1994. The principle is not just personal; it was motivated by concerns for the future of the party. That is why I conveyed all the details to the Congress high command,” Bora told reporters.Bora served as Assam Congress president from 2021 to 2025 and was replaced by Gaurav Gogoi last year. He served twice as Member of Parliament from Assam. Asked if we would join any other political party ahead of the elections, Bora said, “No party has made any proposal to him so far”.He said: “Although no formal proposal has been made by any political party, it is a fact that I have not made the decision to resign and bid farewell to politics.” Assembly elections in Assam’s 126 constituencies are likely to be held in March-April this year, and the Congress is seeking to form an alliance with several other opposition parties to participate in the elections.Currently, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party has 64 members in the 126-member Assam Assembly, while its allies AGP has 9 MLAs, UPPL has 7 MLAs and BPF has 3 MLAs.In the opposition camp, the Congress has 26 MLAs, the AIUDF has 15 MLAs and the CPI(M) has one MLA.
