The 130th Boston Marathon will be held on Monday, April 20, continuing a tradition that dates back to 1897 and remains the oldest annual marathon in the world. Held annually on Patriots’ Day, the race follows an established route from Hopkinton to Boston, covering 26.2 miles, passing through eight towns in Massachusetts and ending on Boylston Street in Copley Square. This year more than 30,000 runners are expected to participate, representing more than 130 countries and all 50 U.S. states. The event also relies on approximately 10,000 volunteers organized by the Boston Athletic Association (BAA), and citywide preparations have begun, including athlete arrivals at Logan Airport and final court setup. The marathon continues to be bigger than the race itself. Analysts estimate that the official philanthropic program will involve 193 nonprofit organizations and generate more than $509 million in revenue for the greater Boston area.BAA offers invite-only entries to select nonprofit organizations through the Bank of America Boston Marathon Official Charity Program. These organizations use these entries to recruit runners who commit to raising funds for their respective causes.
The weather forecast calls for stable, cool weather
Conditions for the 2026 race are expected to be favorable for runners, according to forecasts such as CBS Weather Forecast. Morning temperatures at the Hopkinton starting line are expected to be in the low to mid 40s Fahrenheit (about 4°C to 7°C). By the time runners arrive in Boston, temperatures are expected to rise into the mid-to-low 50s F (about 10° to 13°C) and remain in the mid-to-upper 40s (about 8° to 9°C) for much of the late morning and early afternoon. No heavy rain or snow is expected.

Conditions are also expected to remain consistent throughout. In some years, runners will encounter changing conditions closer to Boston, but that pattern was not predicted this time.
Wind remains the main variable
Winds will be expected throughout the race, with expected wind speeds of 10 to 25 miles per hour (approximately 16 to 40 kilometers per hour). The direction of the wind means it will move across the course rather than directly against the runner. A frontal system moves through eastern Massachusetts on Sunday night, and officials are continuing to monitor its strength and direction, which will determine the final situation.The marathon is held concurrently with other events throughout Boston. The Boston Red Sox are scheduled to take on the Detroit Tigers at Fenway Park at 11:10 a.m., which will increase activity around the city on game day.
Final preparations before game day
Athletes have begun arriving in Boston, and volunteers and organizers will have until Monday to handle the logistics. For many runners, the race represents the end of a long training cycle, but for the city it remains one of the largest annual events, combining elite competition, mass participation and fundraising under a single event structure.
