New Delhi: The Women’s Reservation Bill was defeated in the Lok Sabha on Friday as it failed to get the required two-thirds majority after two days of heated debate on the bill and the proposed delimitation exercise.The constitutional amendment failed to pass and the ruling NDA did not have the necessary numbers to push through the Nari Bill.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said, “The amendment to the Constitution (131st Amendment) was not passed as it did not get 2/3 majority when it was voted on in the House.”The debate featured heated exchanges on the House floor. Union Home Minister Amit Shah termed the opposition as “anti-women” for opposing the bill.Opposition Lok Sabha leader Rahul Gandhi, on the other hand, termed the bill as “anti-national”. Several other opposition leaders, including Akhilesh Yadav and Priyanka Gandhialso raised strong objections.one day ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Lawmakers were called on not to politicize the bill when speaking on the issue.After the failure of the Constitutional Amendment Bill, the BJP-led Center decided to move forward with the Delimitation Bill and a separate bill to amend the women’s quota in Union Territories.
