The beloved “Surf Dog” turned a unique beach activity into an international sensation. She passed away early Monday morning in the arms of her owner, Ryan Rustan.

Just weeks before her death, Sugar rode her final wave – a sad farewell to a dog that many believe revolutionized the sport.

Rustam delivered the news via a heartfelt social media message, saying, “She absolutely loves you guys!! She lived to put a smile on her face, volunteers, send it!! Change dog surfing forever!!!”

“Thank you love sugar, goodbye my sugar. I can’t believe I’m writing this…I’m going to miss you so much,” the post added.

Who is Sugar?

Sugar was the first animal inducted into the Surfers Hall of Fame, cementing her place in California surfing history.

Beyond her surfing achievements, her influence was equally important. Working with Surfing Therapy, Sugar visited veterans at the Long Beach Veterans Administration Hospital, sharing the same joy she brings on land as she does in the ocean.

Sugar launched a GoFundMe campaign before his death

Before her death, Sugar fought a very public battle with cancer. “We’ve been fighting her cancer together – vet visits, special food, medicine and all the little things I buy to keep her comfortable and happy in the waves,” said Sugar’s owner, Ryan Rustan, who started a GoFundMe campaign to cover the dog’s medical expenses and nearly reached its goal of $16,000.

“Every donation helps make up for the money I’ve already spent and helps me prepare for what’s next.”

“Sugar brought so much joy to so many people. If his story touched your heart, any support would mean the world.”
