New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi Kaynes Technology on Tuesday inaugurated its Rs 3,300-crore semiconductor facility at Sanand GIDC in Ahmedabad, marking the second such facility in the country as it ramps up its semiconductor manufacturing plans. The plant is part of the Semiconductor Mission and is expected to enhance domestic chip production capacity. Speaking at the event, Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s broader ambitions in the industry, saying the country was positioning itself as a reliable player in the global semiconductor supply chain. India is not only witnessing global changes but is also poised to lead them, he added, pointing out that Semiconductor Mission 2 was launched in the latest budget to promote self-reliance across the production sector, PTI reported. “India in the 21st century is not only witnessing change but is moving forward with determination to lead this change. We launched Semiconductor Mission 2 in the last budget to make India self-reliant in various areas of production,” the Prime Minister said. The Prime Minister also said that India’s decision to join the Pax Silica initiative will help enhance access to critical minerals necessary for semiconductor manufacturing, PTI reported.Arjun Modhwadia, Gujarat’s science and technology minister, said the factory will produce more than 700,000 chips per day. Ahead of the launch ceremony on Monday, he said: “In the semiconductor manufacturing chain, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate a Rs 3,300-crore Kaynes Semicon plant in Sanand tomorrow. This will be the second plant in the series and the plant will produce over 7 lakh chips per day.““With the second unit, we are entering this era of future industries. What is unique about the Prime Minister is his ability to transform challenges into opportunities,” he told ANI.The inauguration ceremony comes just weeks after Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Micron semiconductor plant in February. Talking about the progress of the project, he said: “The memorandum of understanding for the facility was signed in June 2023, the foundation stone was laid in September, and by February 2026, commercial production has begun. Even in developed countries, such approvals and processes would take years, but India completed this seemingly impossible task in just 900 days. When intentions are clear and committed to the rapid development of the country, policies will become decisive and decisions will naturally gain momentum. ” Earlier in the day, Modi also inaugurated the Samrat Samprati Museum on the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti at Koba Tirth in Gandhinagar. Named after Samrat Samprati, grandson of Emperor Ashoka, the museum focuses on the history and cultural heritage of Jainism.
