Arizona Rep. Yassamine Ansari has moved to impeach the defense secretary Peter Heggsfiled six articles accusing him of misconduct ranging from illegal military operations to mishandling classified information.
Here’s a closer look at who she is and the reasons behind the move.
Ansari is a new lawmaker representing Arizona3rd Congressional District. She is also the only Democratic Iranian-American currently serving in Congress, KTAR News reported.
Ansari introduced six separate articles targeting Heges. According to 12 News, the charges include:
She said in a statement that Hegseth’s conduct “reaches the threshold of a felony and a misdemeanor and requires Congress to immediately undo it.”
A key issue raised by Ansari was the February 28 strike at an Iranian primary school that reportedly killed more than 165 people, many of them children. According to KTAR News, responsibility for the attack remains disputed, although preliminary findings from the Pentagon indicate U.S. involvement in the attack.
Ansari said these alleged actions had serious consequences for civilians and global stability.
The congressman also pointed to a controversy involving a Signal group chat that reportedly included war plans being shared with a reporter. According to KTAR News, the editor-in-chief of The Atlantic Monthly also allegedly joined Hegseth in the chat to discuss planning attacks on Houthi rebel targets in Yemen.
Ansari believes that such behavior “unauthorized disclosure of classified information puts the U.S. military at serious risk.”
Ansari tied her position to her personal background and constitutional obligations. “As the daughter of Iranian immigrants, and as someone sworn to uphold the Constitution, I know this must not continue,” she said, according to Twelve News.
She added, “The stakes for American service members and our national security, the people of Iran and innocent civilians around the world, and global stability are too high to ignore.”
this Impeach The effort has the support of several Democratic lawmakers, including Sarah McBride and Lauren Underwood, as well as advocacy groups.
