Damanjit Singh and Padhaman Singh

Two men have been arrested and charged after a shooting at a home in Surrey, Canada, that police say was linked to an extortion threat.According to the Surry Police Department, the incident occurred around 12:40 a.m. on April 22 in the 13400 block of 87A Avenue. Police responded to reports of shots fired and later confirmed damage to a home and vehicle. No one was injured.Damanjeet Singh, 22, and Pardaman Singh, 30, were arrested during the operation. Both men were charged with firing a firearm into the presence of a person knowingly or recklessly, and possessing a restricted or prohibited firearm without a licence.Police said both men have been remanded in custody. Damanjeet Singh will appear in court on May 19, while Pardaman Singh is scheduled to appear in court on June 1. Surrey Police also confirmed that both defendants are foreign nationals and said the Canada Border Services Agency was involved in the matter. Authorities released photos of the defendants, saying their disclosure was necessary to assist ongoing investigations and help identify broader criminal networks linked to violent extortion cases. The case comes amid growing concerns in Canada about extortion-related violence targeting South Asian communities. A recent advisory from financial intelligence agency FINTRAC warned of ongoing activity targeting diaspora communities involving “economically vulnerable young Indian male nationals of Canada on study permits who are used as foot soldiers in targeted violence by gangs.”
