'Devotion is etched in our consciousness': PM Modi pays tribute to fallen soldiers on Pulwama attack anniversary

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid tribute to the soldiers killed in the Pulwama attack seven years ago, calling them “brave heroes”.“In memory of the brave heroes who laid down their lives in Pulwama on this day in 2019. Their dedication, determination and service to their country are forever etched in our collective consciousness. Every Indian draws strength from their enduring courage,” Prime Minister Modi said on X.Vice President Radhakrishnan also expressed his condolences on the seventh anniversary of the attack. “I salute the brave men and women who gave their lives in this war Pulwama terror attack. Their supreme sacrifice will forever remain etched in the memory of the nation and continue to inspire us in building a strong and secure India. “On February 14, 2019, one of the deadliest terrorist attacks in Indian history occurred in the Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. A suicide blast attacked a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) convoy traveling along the Srinagar-Jammu national highway, killing 40 people. The day has since become known as “Black Day” in the country’s security narrative.A convoy of 78 buses carrying nearly 2,500 Central Reserve Police personnel was traveling from Jammu to Srinagar when an explosive-laden vehicle rammed into one of the buses, causing massive casualties and destruction. The attack drew widespread international condemnation and led to an immediate tightening of security protocols in Jammu and Kashmir. Pakistan-based militant group Jaish-e-Mohammed claimed responsibility and said a suicide bomber carried out the attack, local media reported.India responded with a series of counterterrorism measures, the most notable of which were air strikes on so-called terror training camps in Pakistan. The military operation marked a sharp escalation in tensions between the two countries.Beyond its immediate impact, the Pulwama attack has reignited global debates on cross-border terrorism, militants in Jammu and Kashmir and broader security dynamics between India and Pakistan.

'Bring back the king': Why Nepal calls for restoration of monarchy

Thousands of supporters of Nepal’s former king gathered outside Kathmandu’s Tribhuvan International Airport on Friday, demanding the restoration of the monarchy that was deposed nearly two decades ago.As hundreds of police in riot gear tried to control supporters at the airport’s main gate, Gyanendra Shah waved to cheering crowds from the sunroof of her car. The former king had just returned from a trip to eastern Nepal.“Bring back the king. We love our king more than ourselves. Restore the constitutional monarchy,” the crowd chanted.More supporters lined the route from the airport to his private residence. The rally remained peaceful and no arrests were reported. As Gyanendra returned home from a three-month holiday in eastern Nepal, pro-monarchy demonstrators chanted “King, come save the country,” laid flowers and waved national flags.“We must restore the monarchy because the king can be a caring guardian for all Nepalese people, which many corrupt political leaders fail to do,” said Sanatan Prasad Regmi, 55, a Gyanendra supporter. “We don’t need a republic.”

Protest despite restrictions

The rally took place despite a prohibitory order issued by the Kathmandu District Administration Office banning gatherings of more than five people in the airport area and surrounding areas.Security around the airport is tight to prevent the situation from escalating.Cadres of the pro-monarchy Rastriya Prajatantra Party, led by senior leader Kamal Thapa, were present. They were joined by loyalist groups led by Navaraj Subedi and medical professional Durga Prasai, who had been gathering at the airport area since Friday morning.

Why monarchy issues are resurfacing again

Nepal abolished the monarchy in 2008 after massive street protests in 2006 forced Gyanendra to give up his dictatorship. Parliament later voted to formally end the monarchy, and he left the palace to live a civilian life in Kathmandu. However, pro-monarchy demonstrations re-emerged last year amid economic difficulties and ongoing political instability. Nepal has gone through 14 changes of government in the past 18 years, a pattern that has unsettled investors and slowed economic growth. Many Nepalis have expressed disillusionment with the republican system, accusing it of failing to deliver on its promises of development and job creation.

Political context and upcoming elections

Gen Z youth activists led protests on September 8, triggered by growing dissatisfaction over corruption, lack of accountability and perceived failures of political elites after Nepal’s government banned social media. The unrest led to the resignation of Prime Minister Sharma Oli. Nepal’s first female chief justice Sushila Karki was sworn in as interim prime minister.Karki, 73, will hold the post until the first week of March, when elections will be held to select a new chief executive. The movement, dubbed the Gen Z Revolution, left 74 people dead when police used lethal force to quell protests against the KP government Sharma Oli is currently in hiding. The royalist support also comes ahead of parliamentary elections scheduled for March 5. A total of 65 political parties are running for 275 seats in parliament. Nearly 19 million of Nepal’s 30 million people are eligible to vote, including nearly 1 million new voters, mostly young people, after recent protests.Pro-Gyanendra groups secured about 5% of the seats in the last election and want to increase their representation. At a press conference in Kathmandu on Thursday, Durga Prasai said they wanted to restore the monarchy before the March 5 general election. He claimed that elections cannot be held without addressing the agenda of relocating a Hindu monarch in the country.Despite apparent support from royalist groups, Gyanendra’s chances of an immediate return to power are limited as parties opposed to a return to the monarchy still enjoy wider political support.

Scanner reports indicate a manhunt is ongoing. At the same time, the latest news pointed out that the scope of the suspect search has been expanded to Marana. One person on

Video of SWAT vehicles being evacuated circulated online. Independent journalist Nick Sortor shared a video and wrote: “The only time they were gone in 11 days was when people related to the case were detained.”

Notably, the last time someone was reported to have been detained in connection with the Guthrie kidnapping, they were later released. It’s unclear who the SWAT team is hunting. when Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos When asked about the movements of the armored police vehicles, he did not provide much information, noting that the most important thing was to protect ongoing law enforcement operations. Nanos also would not confirm whether the operation was related to Guthrie’s case, but later reports seemed to indicate that SWAT vehicles were being prepared for it.

The exact reason why SWAT got involved is unclear, but people online have come up with a range of theories.

Why did the special police stationed in Marana?

A user on X claimed there was a Walmart in Marana and wanted to know if the suspect could have gotten the backpack from there. After the FBI released video of a masked suspect at Guthrie’s home, they narrowed it down and identified the backpack.

Another claimed police had probed a suspect’s phone at the location. Others noted that Marana’s action came shortly after authorities announced they had found DNA unrelated to Guthrie and his family at their residence near Tucson, Arizona, and sent it for testing.

A source familiar with the matter noted the distance between the locations, saying: “The bomb squad active in Marana in Swat, Pima County, is approximately 23 miles from missing Nancy Guthrie’s home in the Catalina Foothills near Tucson, Arizona. DNA from the home did not match her or close contacts and may belong to a male suspect.”

Someone else asked: “There’s clearly something going on right now. Will we see a major breakthrough in the case?”.

SC advises Himachal Pradesh High Court that democratically elected government must be allowed to play its role

New Delhi: Supreme Court The Himachal Pradesh Supreme Court on Friday repeatedly interfered with the state government’s decisions and said the high court did not appear to allow the elected government to function. The SC warned that such interference would be taken seriously in future.Despite these oral remarks, a bench of Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi said the apex court had rightly rejected the Himachal Pradesh government’s reliance on the ongoing delimitation process to seek a six-month postponement of local body elections. “The pendency of the delimitation exercise cannot be a ground for seeking postponement of the elections,” the bench said.It also said that the Supreme Council was correct in saying that timely holding of elections to urban local bodies, municipalities and nagar panchayat is constitutionally mandated. HP has about 3,500 gram panchayat, 90 panchayat samitis, 11 zila parishad and 71 urban local bodies, most of which are going to the polls this year.Taking into account logistical and winter transportation issues to remote areas, the committee extended the NPC’s April 30 deadline for completing local body elections by a month to May 31.Senior advocate Maninder Singh, appearing for the petitioners on a plea seeking completion of the delimitation exercise by February 28, told the bench that the high court had set the deadline considering that the nationwide census exercise would begin from May 1. He said it was the State Election Commission that cited this fact in the SC.For the state government, senior advocate V Giri said the apex committee should keep in mind the logistics while setting a deadline for completing the civic body elections. The CJI-led bench said in its order, “The Supreme Council’s direction that elections to local bodies must be held after the expiration of their terms as mandated by the Constitution does not merit any interference.”“However, taking into account logistical difficulties, we have revised the timetable and directed that all preparations must be completed by March 31, instead of February 28. The election will be held eight weeks thereafter, that is, by May 31. Applications for extension of time will not be entertained.”
