Who is Ramesh Shukla?

For more than sixty years, Ramesh Shukla has quietly chronicled the United Arab Emirates’ transformation from desert town to global power. The man known to many as the UAE’s “royal photographer” died of cardiac arrest in Dubai on Sunday at the age of 87.In 1965, Shukla arrived in the UAE by boat from Bombay with little money and a Rolleicord camera. At that time, the UAE had not yet been established. Roads are limited, skyscrapers are non-existent and oil wealth has not completely transformed the region. His early breakthrough came while filming a camel race involving Sheikh Zayed and other rulers of Sharjah. His talent and dedication soon earned him trust and the opportunity to participate in historic national occasions.Over time, Shukla became a common figure at official gatherings, always discreet but always present. He chronicles not just royalty but the dynamics of a nation, construction sites rising from the sand, expanding ports, children growing up in a new country, and the stories of the leaders shaping a shared future.Although the term “Royal Photographer” was never officially named, it was first used by Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, who recognized Shukla’s extraordinary role in documenting the country’s leadership and defining milestones.Shukla is survived by his wife Tarun Shukla and son Neil Shukla. His death marks the end of an era in the UAE’s visual history.

Historical images defy UAE’s memory

Ramesh Shukla took some of the most influential photographs in UAE history. These include the iconic photo of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan signing the Alliance Declaration on December 2, 1971, the day the UAE was officially established.Another legendary image often referred to as the “Spirit of the Union” shows the founding fathers standing together under the UAE flag. The image now appears on the country’s 50-Dirham note, making Shukla’s work a part of everyday life in the Emirates. His archive spans decades of leadership events, national celebrations, camel races, official ceremonies and everyday scenes of a country rapidly changing before his lens.Today, his photographs are preserved in institutions such as the Etihad Museum and the Zayed National Museum, ensuring that future generations will be able to see the UAE’s journey through his eyes.

legacy in UAE History

Few expats have left such a lasting mark on the UAE. Ramesh Shukla stood behind the camera and documented wars, celebrations, leadership transitions and national milestones, capturing the moments that now define a nation. His photographs exist in museums, official collections, metro exhibitions, books and even currency. But more importantly, they live on in the collective memory of the UAE.The man behind the camera may have passed away, but the country he helped document will always remember him.

PakistanPakistan’s 61-run defeat to arch-rivals India in the T20 World Cup was largely due to their shortcomings, especially after they bowed out for just 114 runs. Much of the discussion centered on Pakistan’s lack of intensity and inability to match the defending champions, especially in batting. However, former India cricketer Mohammad Kaif feels that this statement unfairly overshadows the excellence of the Indian team on the night. Kaif admitted that Pakistan fell far short of the required standards but felt that India’s quality and composure under pressure deserved more recognition.

T20 World Cup: India humiliates Pakistan again

Speaking on ABP News, Kaif expressed disappointment at the way the debate was shaped, stating Shoaab Akhtar Because the focus is on Pakistan’s struggle rather than India’s performance.“Ever since we started the show, I have been unhappy because you have been saying that Pakistan team is weak anyway and is a lifeless team. If that team had won today, then 100% Shoaib Akhtar would have said now that BCCI is proud and the players are too arrogant,” Kaif said.“What I am trying to say is that by showing Pakistan’s weakness, you are taking away what is great about India. You have just shown that Pakistan is in trouble and has no system, but what does that have to do with India?” he continued.Kraft pointed out Ishan KishanA match-winning 77 off 40 balls was an example of India thriving under extreme pressure. The opener was his first match against Pakistan and despite a challenging pitch, he produced one of the standout performances in the history of the India-Pak T20 World Cup.“We are talking about India, Indian captain Ishan Kishan playing Pakistan for the first time – how much pressure he has to endure, we are not talking about that. Give credit to the Indian players because they played in such conditions, imagine if they had lost, there would have been an outcry,” Kaif pointed out.He also highlighted the intense scrutiny faced by Indian players in such high-stakes tournaments and recalled how criticism escalated after the defeat at the 2021 World Cup.“do you speak Suryakumar Yadav No handshake, now the team loses and they think they are so brave. Ishan Kishan, Jasprit Bumrahif they lose this game today, everyone will be judged. ” Kraft said.As India enters the Super 8 stage, Kaif’s comments are a reminder that in a tournament of this magnitude, victory depends not just on the mistakes of the opponent but also on skill, temperament and the ability to withstand intense pressure.

2,000-year-old Iron Age temple discovered in Denmark, highlighting a major ancient settlement

Danish archaeologists have confirmed that a 2,000-year-old Iron Age temple and more fortified settlement have emerged beneath a peaceful stretch of grassland in Hedegau, near Eströfum in central Jutland, providing clues to Northern Europe’s politics, religion and trade. Experts say the site could be one of the most important power centers ever discovered in Denmark. For decades, Hedegaard remained mundane beneath the surface, a well-preserved cultural layer barely affected by modern agriculture. The sheer size and complexity of temples and settlements seemed to mark a community with significant influence, wealth, and connections far beyond the local area.

How Hedegaard’s hidden Iron Age obsession was discovered

In 1986, archaeologist Orla Madsen Hedegaard discovered an unusually rich burial site filled with weapons. Excavation continued for several years but was stopped in 1993. For decades, the site lay largely dormant, quietly guarding its secrets. In 2016, the Midtjylland Museum resumed research, but it was not until 2023 that the true scale of the settlement became apparent. Archaeologists realized that the cemetery was part of a larger defensive complex that included workshops, elite residences, defensive buildings and a central religious temple.

The Temple of Hedsego: a central hub of Iron Age ritual and power

The temple is located in the center and dates back to around 0 AD. It measures approximately 15 meters by 16 meters and is almost rectangular in shape, with a ring of sturdy columns forming a colonnade around the smaller internal structure. The interior building has deep pillars and walls made of clay and split planks, with the entrance facing south.Inside, archaeologists discovered a 2×2 meter high fireplace decorated with stamped and linear patterns. Experts say it was clearly not intended for cooking but for ritual purposes, and is the first clear look at Danish Iron Age religious architecture. “Everything here is bigger and wilder than usual,” museum inspector Martin Winther Olesen told Dr.Dk. “Nothing is ordinary.” Around 0 AD, the northern expansion of the Roman Empire reached the Elbe River near Jutland. Hedegaard’s fences and defensive structures seemed to be a response to this looming threat. The fortifications reflect technical knowledge and strategic planning, possibly influenced by Rome’s sense of military power. This is no ordinary village. Hedegaard brought together ritual, political and economic authority in one place. Its defense might be a message: This is a place not to be ignored.

'You have 5 years': Rajnath's 'challenge' to DRDO to develop fifth- and sixth-generation aero engines
Union Defense Minister Rajnath Singh (PTI Photo)

New Delhi: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh urged on monday defense research and development organization Scientists at the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) will complete the indigenous aero-engine project within five years instead of taking decades as conventionally expected. The minister emphasized India’s strategic autonomy and the importance of quickly mastering key technologies, and said that taking into account the country’s current situation and strategic requirements, the 25-year goal must be compressed to five years.Rajnath Singh acknowledged that the deadline was a challenge; however, he said it shouldn’t be “a shock or a surprise.”“If it takes 25 years to develop an engine, then given the current situation in India, our strategic imperatives and our national ambitions, we have to assume that 20 of those years have passed and only five are left. This shouldn’t come as a shock or surprise. This is a challenge. We must achieve in these five years what usually takes other countries twenty years. We must do everything we can in this compressed time,” the defense minister said.Rajnath Singh further stated that India cannot continue to be limited to fifth-generation engines and must immediately begin research on sixth-generation and advanced technologies. He said the increasing global use of artificial intelligence, machine learning and advanced materials in defense systems requires India to stay ahead.Speaking at the Gas Turbine Research Institute in Bengaluru, Rajnath Singh said the institute, which operates under the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO), has become “the foundation of India’s strategic capabilities” and praised its scientists for continuously conducting successful tests and strengthening India’s defense preparedness. The minister reiterated that in the rapidly evolving geopolitical realities, self-reliance in critical defense technologies is no longer an option.“When we came to power, we took steps towards self-reliance. In the defense sector, we also made some efforts to promote self-reliance. As defense minister, during my tenure of nearly seven years, I made every effort to prioritize the development of aerospace engines and we did that,” he said.“Looking at today’s global political situation, I don’t think it is necessary to explain the importance of self-reliance in such a critical technology. The geopolitical landscape of the world is changing rapidly. Supply chains are breaking and new ecosystems are developing. In this situation, only countries with their own technology can remain safe, secure and self-sustainable,” news agency ANI quoted him as saying. He further said, “We are going through such a historical phase where the eyes of the world are on India. All countries want to be a part of India’s growth story. All countries want to be partners in our ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative. In this scenario, we have many options, many opportunities. We have to make the most of these opportunities and further enhance our technological capabilities.”

The significance of aviation engines

Aviation engines in the defense field refer to the propulsion systems that power military aircraft such as fighter jets, transport aircraft, helicopters, and certain drones. In the case of a fighter aircraft, it is typically a high-performance turbofan engine that generates the thrust required for supersonic speeds, rapid climb, maneuverability, and sustained operation in demanding conditions. It also supports key functions such as afterburning performance, payload capability and combat range. Simply put, the engine determines the speed, distance and efficiency of military aircraft. Its significance lies in strategic autonomy. Aviation engines are one of the most complex and tightly controlled defense technologies in the world, mastered by only a few countries. If a country relies on foreign engine suppliers, it remains vulnerable to supply constraints, upgrade restrictions and export restrictions. For India, developing indigenous aero engines is crucial not only to power existing platforms like Tejas, but also for future projects like next-generation fighter jets. Mastering this technology can strengthen national security, reduce long-term dependence, and place the country among the global elite in technology.
