Study says human brain can grow new cells and remain sharp into 80s

0

New Delhi: For many people, aging brings with it a slight decline in memory. A forgotten name, a misplaced key. For others, memory loss becomes more severe. Yet some octogenarians are still as sharp as they were decades ago.A paper published in the journal Nature suggests that one reason for this may lie deep in the brain’s memory centers, which continue to produce new cells even late in life. The study provides strong evidence that the adult brain continues to generate new neurons in the hippocampus, a key region for learning and memory, even though this process is disrupted by Alzheimer’s disease.

Mind over matter

Using advanced single-cell genetic techniques, the researchers analyzed nearly 3,56,000 cells in postmortem hippocampal samples from different age groups – from young to healthy elderly, early Alzheimer’s cases, diagnosed patients and “super-aged” – to identify neural stem cells and immature neurons and trace a clear pathway from stem cells to mature neurons.Age itself does not terminate this process. Healthy older adults still show neuron formation. But in Alzheimer’s disease, there are significantly fewer immature neurons. The stem cells are still present, but their development into functional neurons appears to be impaired.Dr Manjari Tripathi, head of neurology at AIIMS, said this reflects neuronal plasticity, the brain’s ability to adapt and renew itself even in adulthood. She believes this can be enhanced through exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep, reduced stress, a strong social network and managing cardiovascular risk. Sleep, in particular, is critical for memory consolidation and neuronal sprouting. She noted that many “super seniors” remain mentally active and socially active.Researchers have detected early molecular changes in individuals with Alzheimer’s-related pathology but no symptoms, suggesting that the disruption of renewal may begin years before memory decline occurs.Dr. Sudhir Kumar, a neurologist at Apollo Hospitals in Hyderabad, said neurogenesis occurs at a slower rate in adults than in childhood but still serves important functions. New neurons are adaptive and help distinguish similar memories. If this regenerative capacity declines early in Alzheimer’s disease, future diagnostics might be able to detect it before symptoms appear, he added. He suggested that treatment should not only focus on clearing toxic proteins such as amyloid, but also strengthen the brain’s repair systems through targeted treatments and lifestyle measures.

Over 700 flights canceled today: Emirates, India and global airlines disrupted as US, Israel, Iran war escalates
Global air travel disrupted as Iran conflict closes key Middle East airspace / Picture: File

Today, Sunday, March 1, 2026, the global aviation industry is experiencing a wave of massive disruptions as the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel and Iran forces the closure of multiple airspaces. With more than 700 flights canceled and hundreds more diverted, one of the world’s most important air corridors is virtually offline. What started as localized restrictions has expanded into a regional emergency, affecting all major airlines from Dubai’s Emirates to Air India and European giants such as Lufthansa.

Middle East airspace closed

A dramatic escalation in hostilities involving the United States, Israel and Iran today has rocked the global aviation industry, grounding hundreds of flights and forcing airlines to suspend operations at major hubs in the Gulf.Airspace in parts of Iran and adjacent corridors has been closed or declared unsafe. This severely disrupts one of the world’s busiest air corridors connecting Europe, Asia and Africa through the Gulf.According to aviation data cited in the regional report:

  • As of early afternoon today (March 1), 716 flights have been cancelled.
  • More than 1,800 flights were canceled the day before
  • Thousands of passengers stranded or rebooked
  • Operations at major transportation hubs such as Dubai International Airport have been partially disrupted

Emirates flights suspended today

At the height of regional tensions, the UAE’s main airline temporarily halted operations to ensure passenger safety.

airline Operational update period Passenger options
Emirates Airlines All flights from Dubai suspended Until 3pm UAE time Rebook for free or get a full refund
flydubai All flight operations suspended Until 3pm UAE time Rebook and full refund
Etihad Airways Suspension of some flight departures early operating window Flexible changes and rebooking

Flights gradually resumed after 3pm, but schedules remain unstable and rolling delays are possible. Airlines warned further changes may be made based on airspace safety assessments.

Air India cancels international flights

The Indian aviation industry has been particularly hard hit today. India’s Ministry of Civil Aviation has warned that some 444 international flights may be canceled on March 1 due to continued restrictions on airspace in the Middle East and the Gulf. Local airlines such as Air India, IndiGo, Alkasa Air and India Express have extended the suspension of westbound and Middle Eastern flights as a precautionary measure. By late night, airports such as Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport had recorded nearly 98 flight cancellations, including major long-haul routes to London, New York, Chicago and European cities that usually pass through Gulf airspace.Domestic airports are on operational alert, with some claiming they would not be able to accommodate more diverted planes until early Sunday due to a lack of parking spaces. The cancellations have left passengers stranded and caused one-way fares to skyrocket, with some flights to London on March 1 reportedly costing around 140,000 rupees (about $1,700).

What happened?

Today’s travel chaos doesn’t happen in isolation. These cancellations come against the backdrop of a sharp increase in military hostilities, which began in late February and lasted until 1 March. According to independent media reports, after months of tensions, the United States and Israel conducted joint air strikes on Iranian military infrastructure, including leadership facilities.Iran responded with missile attacks on regional targets including U.S. bases and locations in neighboring Gulf states. This reportedly led to damage to civilian infrastructure such as Dubai International Airport and at least one death in Abu Dhabi. Several countries, including Iran, Israel, Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, have closed their airspace to civilian aircraft due to security concerns. The closures effectively closed the main east-west airflow route used by thousands of flights each day, causing widespread aviation disruption that continues to this day.

What must travelers do now?

Travelers flying today or in the coming days must remain proactive and flexible. First, since flight schedules change frequently, passengers should check flight status directly through the airline website or official mobile app before heading to the airport. Arriving at the airport without confirming departure status may result in unnecessary waits.Second, travelers whose reservations have been affected should immediately consider rebooking or refund options. Most airlines are offering fee waivers due to extraordinary circumstances, but seats on alternative flights are limited and fill up quickly. Taking action early increases your chances of getting an earlier replacement flight.Third, passengers with connecting itineraries should contact the airline to confirm the onward flight segment, because if not handled properly, a single cancellation may cause the remaining tickets to be automatically invalidated. The travel insurance provider should also be notified if coverage includes trip interruption, hotel stays, or missed connections.Fourth, as the geopolitical situation remains fluid, those planning new travel in the coming week should consider flexible or refundable fares. Experts recommend avoiding short layovers and choosing direct routes where possible to reduce the risk of cascading disruptions. Finally, travelers are urged to pay close attention to official government advice and airline alerts. Aviation authorities may impose further restrictions at short notice as military tensions continue.

The situation is still evolving

As of the evening of March 1, airlines continued to check operations hourly. While some services have resumed, uncertainty remains high. Aviation officials stressed that safety considerations will determine the pace of normalization. Currently, travelers in the UAE, India and elsewhere face an unstable travel environment caused not by weather or technical glitches, but by geopolitical instability at the heart of one of the world’s busiest air corridors.

SA vs ZIM Live: Ruthless South Africa vs Zimbabwe

South Africa vs Zimbabwe Live Score: Zimbabwe will need to sort out their bowling woes against a skilful South Africa as they aim to end their action-packed T20 World Cup campaign on a high with the Super 8 final on Sunday.

Reaching the Super Eights as top of their group is part of Zimbabwe’s success story and, inspired by their leader Sikandar Raza, they will be determined to push South Africa to the limit.

Bowling discipline is key against Proteas

South Africa are a must-win team in ICC competitions and if Zimbabwe wants to challenge them, they must improve their bowling performance as they conceded over 250 runs in their first two Super 8 matches against West Indies and India.

Raza knows that his team can only compete with bigger teams if all three departments work together.

“When you play against the best teams in the World Cup, you need all three departments to work together. Unfortunately, if one department is missing then the game gets away from you.

“So hopefully in the last game, leaving it all on the park, we try to sort out all three of our departments and hopefully that gives us the best chance of winning the game,” Raza said after India’s defeat.

errors that need to be corrected

Zimbabwe were guilty of conceding too many goals in the Super 8 stages. They need to show discipline in their group stage matches against Australia and Sri Lanka.

Their unbeaten run in the group stages was achieved on Sri Lanka’s slow pitches, but the margin of error dropped dramatically in batting-friendly Indian conditions, as they experienced in Mumbai and Chennai.

Batting Strategy: Maximizing the Power Play

On the batting front, the opening duo of Brian Bennett and Tadiwanashe Marumani will need to make the most of the power play.

Bennett is yet to be dropped from a match and he proved against India that he can get out of trouble as well. He needs to find a way to deal with South Africa’s crafty attacks.

South Africa’s Advantages

Marco Jansen and Lungi Ngidi, with 11 wickets each, are the standout bowlers for the Proteas, with pace spearheads Kagiso Rabada, Corbin Bosch and frontline spinner Keshav Maharaj also providing good complements.

The top three players – captain Aiden Markram, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickton – are at their best and it will take a special bowling effort from Raza and his team to stop them.

The middle order including David Miller, Tristan Stubbs and Dewald Brevis also made an impact in the Super 8 stage.

location and context

The South African team, which has played only in Ahmedabad and Delhi so far, will return to the national capital for its final Super 8 match.

In the five matches played here, the 200-run mark has been crossed only once, with India crossing the 209-run mark against Namibia.

It was effectively a dead end, with South Africa already in the semi-finals and Zimbabwe eliminated after back-to-back defeats.

team

Zimbabwe: Sikandar Raza (captain), Brian Bennett, Ryan Burl, Graeme Cremer, Bradley Evans, Clive Madande, Tinodema Maposa, Tadiwanashe Marumani, Wellington Masakadza, Tony Munyonga, Tashinga Musekiwa, Blessing Muzarabani, Dion Myers, Richard Ngarava, Ben Curran.

South Africa: Aiden Markram (captain), Corbin Bose, Dewald Blevis, Quinton de Kock, Marco Janssen, George Linde, Keshav Maharaj, Quina Mafaka, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Anrich Notje, Kagiso Rabada, Ryan Rickton, Jason Smith, Tristan Stubbs.

South Africa look to remain unbeaten in Super Eights against Zimbabwe

NEW DELHI: “The favourite.” That’s a label that weighs heavily on South Africa’s shoulders, given their history of choking up at ICC events across the globe. However, the new-look team appears to have turned a new page after ending its championship drought by winning the World Test Championship (WTC) crown at Lord’s last June.Eight months later, the Aiden Markram-led side appear to be on course for another world title in the T20 World Cup and remain the only unbeaten team in the tournament. South Africa have won all six of their games to seal a semi-final spot and their final Super 8 match against Zimbabwe at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday turned into an inconsequential draw.

T20 World Cup 2026: Sourav Ganguly backs batting wonder at Eden Gardens

While South African batting coach Ashwell Prince doesn’t want to look too far ahead, he admits that the WTC victory instilled a lot of confidence in the team that they will win the world title for the first time in the limited-overs format. “Crossing the line at the World Trade Center is a big moment for us as a country and for this group of players, who are basically the same group of players. Queenie (Quinton de Kock) have returned to the format and brought a lot of experience with them, adding to the experience of those playing in the Test Championship finals. This creates a lot of confidence and trust. Your teammates have the belief that when their time comes, they can step up and deliver,” he said.Apart from their Super Over win over Afghanistan, South Africa have beaten their opponents with ruthless efficiency. The outfit doesn’t rely on individual talent and looks like a well-oiled whole. Top orders include Markram, Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickton Their team got off to a bright start in most games. When they failed, the mid-level players, especially David Miller and Dewald Breivis, fought back aggressively. Tristian Stubbs provided the final assist. However, it was their bowling attack that gave the Proteas the lead. Although Kagiso Rabada was not at his best, the fast bowling trio of Lungi Ngidi, Marco Jansen and Corbin Bosch made up for it by taking 31 of the 45 wickets South Africa took in the tournament. The Markram-led side had a mediocre performance, with the only bright spot being their catching. They have conceded at least eight catches in six games, which is highly unusual for a South African team.Zimbabwe, on the other hand, has lost all of its energy after setting foot on Indian soil for the Super Eights. Zimbabwe, who have already exited the semi-finals, were unable to maintain control over their opponents as they had in the group stages on a slow Sri Lankan track.

Aggressive H3N2 variant prompts changes to this year’s flu vaccine

0

New Delhi: India will update its seasonal flu vaccine to deal with fast-spreading new strains, Anuja Jaiswal reports, after a year that saw a sharp early rise in flu cases in several countries. The World Health Organization has released its annual recommendations for the 2026-27 Northern Hemisphere influenza season based on global surveillance data showing that a new A(H3N2) variant, known as the K clade, is becoming dominant. India, being part of the Northern Hemisphere, follows this guidance every year to decide which strains to cover in the flu vaccine. The new strain appears to spread more easily than earlier versions. While not necessarily more severe for everyone infected, its higher transmissibility has led to increased case numbers and earlier-than-usual flu activity in many areas.“The updated recommendations are timely given the rapid spread of new variants around the world,” said Dr. Rommel Tickoo, chief of internal medicine at Sackett Max Hospital. “The H3N2 strain is often associated with more severe disease, especially in older adults and people with existing health problems. Because influenza viruses are constantly changing, it is critical to update the vaccine annually. Early vaccination of high-risk groups can reduce complications and hospitalizations.”WHO recommends updating components for H1N1, H3N2 and B/Victoria strains. Indian vaccine makers will now adjust production to match these strains to deliver doses before transmission peaks. Doctors recommend getting a flu shot before winter.

‘Better not do it’: Trump warns Iran against attack, vows to use ‘unprecedented force’

US President Donald Trump issued a fresh warning to Iran on Sunday, telling Tehran that any planned retaliation would be met with “unprecedented” overwhelming military force, as tensions continued to escalate following a joint US-Israeli attack on Iranian targets.

Donald Trump on Iran: 'If they attack us, we will strike with force like never before' (Reuters)
Donald Trump on Iran: ‘If they attack us, we will strike with force like never before’ (Reuters)

Trump said in a social media post that reports that Iran planned a “very harsh” response were being closely watched, but warned: “They better not do it, though, because if they do, we will hit them with force like never before!” track Real-time updates on the US-Iran conflict

Trump’s warning comes as Iranian officials have warned they intend to respond to previous attacks with force. The U.S. president has repeatedly justified U.S. military action as necessary to “defend the American people” and eliminate what his administration calls an imminent threat from Iran’s missile and nuclear programs.

In recent remarks after the United States launched “Operation Epic Fury” on Saturday, Trump also directed members of Iran’s security forces to lay down their weapons or face “certain death,” while urging the Iranian people to rise up and “take over your government” once hostilities subside.

The tensions follow major joint military operations by the United States and Israel, including “significant combat operations” in Iran and resulting in the deaths of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and a number of senior leaders in Tehran.

Iran launches new round of attacks

Iran has launched another round of missile and drone attacks on U.S. military bases and Israeli bases in the Middle East, as retaliation continues following the attack that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The attacks triggered explosions and alarms in several Gulf states, with reports of explosions in Dubai, Doha and Manama as air defense systems responded to the incoming threat.

A statement from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said that the U.S. naval base in the Abdullah Mubarak region of Kuwait was attacked by four ballistic missiles and 12 drones, destroying all infrastructure and causing heavy casualties to U.S. military personnel.

The statement also stated that an MST-class combat support ship transporting fuel to US ships in the Indian Ocean was attacked by an Iranian Qadr 380 missile.

Tehran’s military described the latest operation as one of its most intense offensives to date, with multiple bases and strategic targets under attack.
