The U.S. Department of Labor announced approximately $81 million in grants to help people return to their communities after incarceration. The funding will be provided through the Replacement Employment in Skilled Trades, Advanced Manufacturing, Registered Apprenticeships and Training (RESTART) program. These grants are designed to help formerly incarcerated individuals obtain job training, gain work experience and find employment in skilled trades and other in-demand areas.

“Through our Reopening Plan, the Department of Labor is giving Americans with criminal backgrounds the opportunity to learn the skills they need and find mortgage lending jobs,” said U.S. Secretary of Labor Lori Chavez-Dremer.

“The Trump Administration remains committed to building a skilled workforce that will drive our economy into the future and help every American worker become self-sufficient,” he added.

Who does the RESTART initiative support?

The RESTART program supports workforce preparation and employment for three groups: youth ages 15 to 17, young adults ages 18 to 24, and adults 25 and older. Funding will be provided to eligible organizations to create programs that train ex-offenders for high-demand jobs in the United States and help them become productive members of the U.S. economy.

The grants will support projects such as pre-apprenticeship training, practical work training, artificial intelligence and digital skills courses, access to work certificates and paid work experience. The main goal is to help participants join a registered apprenticeship program. Priority will be given to groups specializing in shipbuilding and those working with registered apprenticeship sponsors.

The Department of Labor plans to support up to 20 RESTART projects across the country. Approximately $30 million will be donated to national or regional organizations that serve youth and young adults, with each award up to $5.1 million. The remaining funds will be allocated to states, territories and tribes for state-led projects related to the public workforce system under the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. These projects will use existing workforce systems to help continue the program even after the grant period ends.

US-Israel War with Iran: A Beginner’s Guide to How the October 7 Hamas Terror Attack Is Changing the Middle East World News

The U.S.-Israel war with Iran: A primer on how the October 7 Hamas terror attack is changing the Middle East

There is a phenomenon on Twitter popular among OSINT enthusiasts called surveillance situations. For those lucky enough to live real lives, monitoring situations is the Olympics of toxic masculinity, which refers to the act of stalking conflicts on social media. It’s a multidisciplinary pursuit that can include inspecting aircraft and closed airspace, comparing different weapons systems, checking deliveries at a Washington pizza shop, looking for obscure facts about obituary authors, digging up old “pookie” tweets from Supreme Leader Khamenei, noticing that Reza Pahlavi has an especially big nose, or wondering why Donald Trump exhibits all the attributes of the Ottoman emperor (PS: all referenced tweets are at the bottom). Over the past three days, social media users have displayed an unprecedented level of monitoring the situation since the United States and Israel launched a campaign to decapitate the so-called axis of resistance. But what is the axis of resistance? Don’t worry, because even if you’re not monitoring the situation, here’s a small detail about what’s going on middle East So far.

key moments in history

There are some pivotal moments in history that end up changing the course of the world. An Italian mistook the Caribbean for India. An East India Company agent appears at the court of the Mughal ruler. An archduke was murdered. An Austrian was rejected from art school. A Swiss patent clerk was bored with his job. Japanese pilots decided to fly a little more than usual. A plane flies into the building. The virus escapes from the laboratory. A former president mocked a real estate developer at a White House dinner. In hindsight, some Hamas terrorists paraglided into a music festival in Israel. Now, as historians are wont to point out, the rift in the Middle East certainly did not begin on October 7, 2023, but its events certainly accelerated the events we are seeing today.

What is the axis of resistance?

If you’ve ever been on social media, you’ve seen this meme: Iran, before the 1979 Islamic Revolution, is often used to portray Iran as some kind of secular utopia, where John Lennon’s “Imagine” meets Rick Bryan’s Casablanca. Then came the Islamic Revolution, which brought the Islamic Republic of Iran to power, specifically the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and its external operations arm, the Quds Force. The new Iranian state has a creed: attack the Big Satan (America) and the Little Satan (Israel) in every possible way. This meant building what came to be known as the “Axis of Resistance,” a name that was a verbal scorn for the “Axis of Evil” (a term used by George W. Bush). Bush described Iran, North Korea and Iraq in 2002.Soon, the axis took shape. Hezbollah was born out of the ashes of Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon and was trained by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards. Yemen’s Houthi rebel group has found a benefactor in Tehran who can attack Saudi oil fields and disrupt Red Sea shipping lanes. Under Hafez and later Bashar Assad, Syria became an indispensable corridor, a land bridge that allowed Iranian weapons and other items to enter Lebanon. Meanwhile, after the destruction of the 2003 U.S. invasion saddam husseinIran-backed Shia militias have become a pain in the ass for U.S. forces due to the Iranian regime’s control of non-existent weapons of mass destruction. Finally, the Sunni Palestinian movement Hamas found common ground with Tehran, whose hostility to Israel ignores any other religious misgivings.Of course, at the top of the Axis pyramid is the Iranian regime led by Supreme Commander Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

How did Israel respond?

After the attack, Benjamin Netanyahu declared in a chilling statement that all the attackers were “the walking dead.” Politicians rarely keep their promises. Many things that Western civilization holds dear—from the atomic bomb to literature—were designed by Jews. So it’s no surprise that they’ve also perfected their revenge on an art form. QuoteOver the years, rumors have told us how deeply Israel has penetrated its enemies (so much so that the joke is that the only living members of Iran’s high command are three Mossad agents whose identities are unknown to each other). Netanyahu and his colleagues acted sloppily in Gaza, killing Hamas commanders with precision and not caring how many civilians they accidentally killed. From exploding pagers to missiles to bombs, Israel dismantled every branch of the Axis powers and then went after their heads.Over the years, Israel has built its own network in Iran, conducted daring attacks and built a war machine that Bob Dylan could sing about. The final attack took just sixty seconds and was a testament to its success, taking place multiple times at multiple locations within the heavily fortified compound. As Oded Ailam, the former head of Mossad’s counterterrorism unit, told the Guardian: “60 seconds. That’s all the time this operation took, but it was years in the making.” The modern battlefield is no longer defined solely by tanks and aircraft. It is defined by data, access, trust and time. One minute can change an area. “The axis of resistance was built over decades. Israel, with the help of Uncle Sam, destroyed it in a little over two years. As the operation went on, it was so successful that it seemed to have eliminated all potential successors. As Donald Trump candidly told reporters: “The attack was so successful that most of the candidates were eliminated. We’re not going to think of anyone because they’re all dead. The second or third place finisher is dead.”

Trump salvo

Of course, none of this would be possible without Donald Trump returning to the White House, especially during a second term in which he has no one to limit him.Trump has long harbored the deepest aversion to Iran.read: OG TrumpismThe first time he expressed any views on foreign policy was in a 1980 interview in which he wondered why a country like the United States could not rescue its own citizens during a hostage crisis. For him, Iran has always been a demon that the United States cannot tame. During Trump’s first term, he launched a drone strike that killed Qasem Soleimani, the head of the Quds Force and generally considered the most powerful person in Iran after the Supreme Leader. Soleimani was often called “the most powerful agent in the Middle East” during his lifetime, and some experts pointed out that Soleimani’s death did weaken the strength of the Axis powers.Since then, Iran has been hell-bent on assassinating Trump and, failing that, ensuring he is not re-elected. This includes hacking Trump’s campaign and even running content farms to try to turn Americans against him. When October 7 occurred, Joe Biden was president, and his views and actions have successfully alienated Americans both for and against Israel. When Biden dropped out, Harris inherited his misgivings, and she tried to drum up support from both parties by running two campaigns simultaneously.Trump’s arrival is manna from heaven for Netanyahu. Don Luoism does not believe in the rules-based international order, believes that whatever he can come up with is the best, wants to improve his monetary status in any feasible way, wants to avenge Iran’s national humiliation, and ultimately believes: We are the United States, b*****. This means that, unlike previous presidents, Trump is the one who ultimately approves the use of lethal force against Iran. All of this foreshadows the arrival of Trump, who has made “peace” in the Middle East one of his pet projects, setting up a peace council composed of key regional players, many of whom oppose Israel but do not say so publicly. Half of the committee is now involved in the war, with its only South Asian member fighting in Afghanistan. He is a man who needs no congressional oversight or legal sanctions. Having survived an assassination attempt and political exile, Trump (and his supporters) appear to believe that he is God’s chosen warrior, walking the talk. After Khamenei’s death, Trump declared: “I caught him before he got me.”Trump and his administration have tried to give various reasons to justify their timing. Very few people pass the smell test.

start

Of course, this isn’t over yet. Like Israel, Iran is a survivalist state that has been preparing for isolation, sanctions and war for decades. Regimes born of revolutions do not disappear simply because their leadership is targeted, nor do networks patiently built in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen simply because a series of operations are executed with astonishing efficiency. They retreat, they realign, they regroup.

Trump’s Iran War Speech Cold Open – SNL

The axis of resistance may fracture, its chain of command may be undermined, and its deterrence weakened, but the forces that produced it remain stubbornly alive. Sectarian politics has not disappeared. Regional competition has not abated. External forces have not withdrawn. What has changed is the balance of fear and confidence, and that balance in the Middle East is always temporary.Trump may believe he has avenged decades of humiliation since the hostage crisis. Netanyahu may believe that he has fulfilled the vows he made after the events of October 7. Yet the region’s history rarely rewards final pronouncements. It tends to respond to certainty in a complicated way. This means that despite precision strikes, covert infiltrations and bold rhetoric, none of us can confidently say what the next chapter will look like. As in the digital age, we can only observe flight paths, read oil markets, parse official statements, and pretend that pattern recognition is prescient. In other words, we will continue to monitor the situation.PS: The tweet mentioned above.1) Pentagon Pizza Watch2) Vague facts about the obituary author3) The old “pookie” tweet4) Reza Pahlavi’s nose5) Donald Trump is the Ottoman Emperor

The area has also been cordoned off.“A leak of oleum occurred at the Bhageria Chemical Company in Boisar around 2 pm today. The regional administration and the fire brigade are carrying out operations to control the gas leak. The leak is continuing. Due to the leak of oleum, a white cloud-like smoke has formed over Boisar. Residential and industrial areas located in the wind direction are being evacuated. Clean-up work is also being carried out in Nakabandi. “Citizens are requested to move against the wind and smoke to a safe place and not to panic,” SP Yatish Deshmukh said.Authorities also reported that three people suffered minor eye irritation, but no serious injuries were recorded.According to a press release from the regional government, the leak occurred in a 2,500-liter oleum daily tank, releasing harmful fumes that spread quickly due to strong winds. The resulting cloud affected nearby schools, factories and residential areas, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 1,000 factory workers and more than 1,600 students at a local school as a safety measure.Emergency teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Bhabha Atomic Research Center (BARC) and the fire brigade rushed to the spot but it was initially difficult to locate the exact source due to high smoke density.“Due to high smoke levels in the affected area, response teams faced difficulties in reaching the exact location of the leak,” an official news release said.Once inside, chemical experts and NDRF personnel equipped with self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) successfully located the leak and deployed sandbags around the tank to contain the smoke, officials added.Authorities said the cause of the leak was still under investigation. The Palghar administration continues to monitor air quality and ensure there is no immediate threat to residents. Dr. Jakhar added that various departments are coordinating efforts to ensure comprehensive containment and prevent recurrence.

How Switzerland became the most prepared country for nuclear bunkers in the world
How Switzerland became the best prepared country for nuclear bunkers in the world (Image: Canva)

Switzerland is often associated with mountains, neutrality and peaceful cities. Yet beneath many homes, schools, hospitals and public buildings lies a vast network of nuclear bunkers. According to The Guardian, Switzerland has more nuclear bunkers per capita than any other country in the world. This is not a recent development or a reaction to a single conflict. Rather, it is the result of decades of planning shaped by fears of war, civil defense laws and beliefs about national disaster preparedness. Even today, most residents live just minutes away from shelters designed to protect them in the event of a nuclear attack or major military attack. Understanding why Switzerland established this system requires understanding its Cold War history, unique laws, and how these bunkers are still maintained and used in modern times.

How Cold War fears prompted Switzerland to build one National fuel network

Switzerland’s bunker system reportedly developed rapidly during the Cold War. Although the country remained neutral, it was surrounded by NATO and Warsaw Pact countries. Swiss authorities fear that any large-scale European war could spread across borders. Nuclear weapons testing and growing tensions in the 1950s and 1960s heightened public concerns. In response, Switzerland focused on civil defense. The idea is simple. Even if the country cannot prevent nuclear war, it can still keep its people safe. Government planners believe that shelters that can withstand blast pressure, radiation and fallout are necessary for survival. This way of thinking has shaped national policy for decades.

1963 law obliges Switzerland to establish nuclear shelters

Switzerland’s legal system is one of the main reasons why it has so many bunkers. Switzerland passed a civil protection law in 1963 stipulating that everyone must have access to nuclear shelters. The law requires new homes to have shelters, or local governments to build shared shelters nearby, The Guardian reports.Builders who cannot build shelters must pay into a public shelter fund. This ensures that even city residents without private shelters will still have a designated place in the event of an emergency. Over time, this law created a nationwide network of shelters directly related to population size.

How many bunkers are there in Switzerland currently?

Switzerland provides approximately 9 million shelters for a population of approximately 8.8 million people. This means that technically, almost every resident has a shelter space. According to reports, no other country has such extensive coverage. These shelters can be anything from large bunkers shared by people under schools and public buildings to small, sturdy rooms in private homes. Many of them have air filters, thick concrete walls, emergency toilets and airtight doors designed to protect against radiation.

Why Switzerland never dismantled its bunkers

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, many countries dismantled or ceased use of Cold War-era shelters. Switzerland, on the other hand, does not. According to The Guardian, Swiss authorities continued to maintain the system even after the 1990s.Officials argue the threats haven’t gone away; they’ve just changed. Nuclear accidents, terrorism and new geopolitical tensions have kept shelters relevant. They also cost less to maintain than to rebuild from scratch if demand returns.

How to use bunker in daily life

Most Swiss bunkers are not empty. Many are reportedly being used as storage rooms, wine cellars, archives or emergency supply spaces. However, they must still be usable as shelter. Owners must keep key features intact, including ventilation systems and reinforced doors.Local governments regularly inspect shelters to ensure they are safe. In some places, evacuation drills still tell people how to get to shelters.

Renewed focus after global conflict

Due to recent events around the world, Swiss bunkers are once again in the news. The Guardian noted that interest in shelters increased after Russia invaded Ukraine. Some residents checked out their designated bunker locations for the first time in years. The Swiss government has assured the public that the shelter system remains operational. Officials also reviewed contingency plans and supply preparedness as part of wider civil defense efforts.

How the Swiss approach compares with other countries

Unlike Switzerland, many European countries rely on evacuation plans rather than shelter systems. The report explains that Switzerland’s geography, political culture and federal structure enable it to invest heavily in localized conservation.Swiss defense planning focuses on decentralization. Rather than a large national sanctuary, the protection is spread over thousands of small sites. This reduces the likelihood of too many people being in one place at once and makes it easier to reach in the event of an emergency.

What the bunker system reveals about Swiss society

Switzerland’s network of shelters shows how the country as a whole is thinking. The Swiss government is based on preparation, taking responsibility in one’s own areas and planning for the future. The report said the fuel system was not seen as a means of panic, but rather as a useful safety measure. Some critics say the Cold War-era shelters are no longer useful, but Swiss officials still view them as a form of insurance. During a nuclear attack, these shelters may never be used, but knowing they are there can make you feel better when things are uncertain.

A system built to last

Switzerland’s network of nuclear bunkers is the result of decades of policy, law and public collaboration. According to reports, this is a rare example of a country that maintained a large-scale civil defense infrastructure long after the end of the Cold War.The bunker is more than just a symbol of fear. They represent national decisions to prioritize civilian protection in worst-case scenarios. Switzerland’s underground shelters are always ready and integrated into daily life, waiting for the day they are needed.
