A Spanish passenger was sprayed with disinfectant by Spanish government officials before boarding the plane after disembarking from the hantavirus-infected cruise ship MV Hondius at the airport in Tenerife, Canary Islands (Photo: AP)
An American passenger evacuated from a hantavirus-hit cruise ship has tested positive for the virus, health officials confirmed Sunday, with the latest news saying the passenger has not yet shown any symptoms. As the virus spreads, many countries have quarantined and monitored passengers returning from ships. The infected American, one of 17 U.S. citizens evacuated from the ship, showed no symptoms and will be transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Center upon arrival in Omaha. For precautionary purposes, other passengers will also be evaluated and monitored at the national quarantine department.Just hours earlier, French Prime Minister Sebastien Le Cornou announced that one of the five French passengers also developed symptoms during the flight and that flights to Paris had resumed. All five passengers immediately underwent rigorous quarantine testing. The MV Hondius-hantavirus cruise ship that arrived in Tenerife, Spain, in the Canary Islands on Sunday, was hit by an outbreak of the deadly hantavirus, killing three people and infecting at least five passengers. During the emergency evacuation, more than 140 passengers from more than 20 countries were present. The World Health Organization has assured that the epidemic does not pose a major threat to the public.WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, “This is not another new coronavirus.” “The risk to the public is low. People should not panic.”Health experts say hantavirus is mainly spread through contact with contaminated rodent feces and is not easily transmitted from person to person. But in rare cases, the Andes strain detected in this outbreak—a specific type of hantavirus found primarily in South America—can spread from person to person in rare cases. Additionally, symptoms may appear one to eight weeks after exposure.WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove said countries receiving passengers have been advised to take active daily health surveillance and quarantine measures. Some countries have implemented strict quarantine protocols for up to six weeks
New Delhi: Congress leaders Shashi Tharoor Questioning the results of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, it was argued that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls may have played a decisive role in the victory of the BJP in the state.Talking about the SIR campaign, Tharoor claimed that mass deletions from electoral rolls and delays in appeal rulings could prevent hundreds of thousands of legal voters from casting their votes.“As far as the SIR is concerned, what I’m saying is a legitimate question that needs to be answered. Look at what happened in Bangladesh. 9.1 million people were taken off the rolls. 3.4 million of them appealed, saying they were around and had the legal right to vote. The rules require each case to be adjudicated individually, so only a few hundred cases are decided before the vote,” he told a roundtable on ‘India, this is Bharat’ on the sidelines of the Stanford India Conference in the US.He added: “To date, in the remaining years, as the ruling continues, approximately 31, 3.2 million people may be identified as legal voters who have missed the opportunity to vote.”Tharoor further pointed to the BJP’s margin of victory in Bengal, saying the figures were closely related to the pending appeals.“BJP won Bengal by a margin of 30 lakh votes. Now you tell me, was it completely fair and democratic? That’s the question I’m asking. Honestly, I have no problem with deleting false, deleted, absentee, migrant voters,” he said. The Congress MP also claimed that the electoral roll revision could have a different political impact on Kerala, saying deletion of duplicate entries could have an adverse impact on the CPM.“Especially in Kerala, I suspect the Congress has benefited from deletion because the CPM has long been the master of double registration, triple registration, quadruple registration – the same people in four different booths and so on. This has happened before. So they were eliminated by the SIR, and as you said, in Kerala and Tamil Nadu, the number of appeals was very low. But in Bengal, there are undoubtedly 3.4 million appeals. That’s 3.4 million forms filled out by 3.4 million people. Tharoor said only a few hundred people had heard of it.The Bharatiya Janata Party scored a historic victory in the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, winning 207 seats, ending the 15-year rule of Mamata Banerjee’s All-India Trinamool Congress party in the state. TMC got 80 seats. After the victory, the BJP formed the first government in West Bengal and Suvendu Adhikari was sworn in as the chief minister.
Limerick cruises are sold as floating holidays, but they are also useful for understanding public health. Cruise ships are thoughtfully designed places where many people live, eat, relax and move around in the same shared space for days.
Hantavirus, coronavirus, norovirus, Legionnaires: Why are cruise ships so prone to disease outbreaks?
They show how easily diseases can spread when people are crowded together in an interconnected environment.
Think of cruise ships as temporary cities at sea. It has a restaurant, theater, elevator, cabanas, kitchen, water system and indoor gathering space. This is very convenient, but it also means that once an infection enters a ship, it can spread around the ship in a way that is difficult to stop.
The Diamond Princess outbreak is perhaps the most famous example. During the 2020 coronavirus outbreak, 619 passengers and crew members tested positive for the disease. Researchers have found that ship conditions make it easier for the novel coronavirus to spread.
Their modeling suggests that public health measures such as isolation and quarantine can prevent more cases, but also suggests that early responses will further limit the outbreak.
Norovirus is the infection most closely associated with cruise ships. In a review of previously published studies, researchers found 127 reports of norovirus outbreaks on cruise ships, many linked to contaminated food, contaminated surfaces and person-to-person transmission.
A recent report in the United States also showed that norovirus can spread very quickly from person to person on cruise ships.
That helps explain why ships like the Celebrity Mercury, Explorer of the Seas and Carnival Triumph have become familiar names in outbreak reports. These are not uncommon in some ways. They are simply environments where shared meals, close contact and frequent movement through common areas lead to the rapid spread of infection.
Food services play an important role in this risk. Buffets, shared utensils, and many people touching the same surfaces can all make it easier for stomach bugs to spread. If someone is infected but doesn’t feel sick yet, they could still contaminate food or surfaces before they realize they are sick.
The ship’s design exacerbated the problem. People spend time together in restaurants, bars, elevators, corridors, theaters and spa areas. Crew members also live and work in the same environment, often in shared accommodation, so diseases can be passed from one passenger to another on the ship, or between passengers and crew.
Ventilation also plays a vital role. Cruise ships are not closed boxes, but they do rely heavily on indoor spaces where people can be together for long periods of time.
Research on air quality on cruise ships shows that disease spreads more easily in crowded, enclosed spaces such as cabins, restaurants and entertainment venues if ventilation systems are not up to par. Adequate fresh air circulation, specialized filters and air purification technology all play an important role in keeping passengers safe.
Legionnaires’ disease presents another risk. It usually does not spread directly from one person to another. Instead, people can become infected by inhaling tiny droplets from contaminated water systems, hot tubs or showers.
Well-known outbreaks among cruise ship passengers have been linked to whirlpool spas, and recent reports from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention describe other cruise ship-related Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks linked to ship water systems.
Age also matters. Cruise holidays are particularly popular with older people, and many passengers have long-term health conditions that make infections more severe. Stomach bugs on a cruise ship can lead to dehydration, and respiratory infections can lead to pneumonia or hospitalization.
Cruise ships do have medical facilities, but they are limited compared to land-based hospitals. They are intended to provide first aid, basic treatment and short-term care, not to respond to large, rapidly spreading outbreaks. That’s why cruise ship health is so dependent on early reporting, rapid isolation and robust cleaning practices.
Other infections, such as respiratory viruses, including the flu, can be spread in the same crowded indoor environments, and stomach bugs can be spread through food, hands and shared surfaces.
Coronavirus and influenza take advantage of closed air and crowds. Norovirus loves buffets and surfaces. The Legionnaires targeted water systems that the ships could not easily disinfect. Hantavirus outbreaks on ships are rare. However, as recent news about deaths aboard the MV Hondius proves, germs spread more easily in close quarters.
How to limit your risk
–
As an epidemiologist, I have seen many outbreaks in hospitals, schools and even on airplanes. For travelers, the best protection starts before boarding the plane. It would be wise to check if the cruise line has clear illness reporting, cleaning and quarantine policies. Make sure your routine vaccines are up to date.
For older adults, pregnant women and anyone with existing health conditions, please consult your GP before traveling. Also, make sure your travel insurance covers illness-related interruptions.
After boarding a plane, washing your hands with soap and water is the most effective step in preventing stomach bugs like norovirus. Hand sanitizer can help, but it’s not a replacement for soap and water. If you start to feel sick, the safest thing to do is to avoid buffets and crowded shared spaces and report symptoms early rather than trying to go about your normal life.
Over time, cruise lines improved their hygiene and epidemic response systems, and many cruises were uneventful. But the basic structure of cruise travel still presents the same challenges: many people sharing the same meals, the same air, the same water systems and the same public spaces.
That’s why epidemics keep coming back, and why cruise ships remain a useful reminder: Public health is shaped as much by germs as it is by design. SKS

US President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s draft ceasefire proposal. (AP Photo)
Iran’s latest response to a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal called for sweeping political, military and economic concessions from Washington, including lifting sanctions, compensating for war losses, withdrawing troops from the region and recognizing Tehran’s sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz, but the terms were quickly rejected by President Donald Trump.Tehran’s response came after Washington presented a 14-point proposal aimed at ending the 10-week conflict that has disrupted global oil supplies and heightened tensions in the Middle East, Iranian state media and Al Jazeera reported. While neither side has publicly released the full text of the proposal, the main differences reveal deep differences over Iran’s nuclear program, regional influence and control of key shipping routes.Iran’s proposal reportedly calls for the United States to lift sanctions, end naval blockades of Iranian ports and lift restrictions on Iranian oil exports as part of a ceasefire arrangement.
damages
Tehran is also demanding the unfreezing of nearly $20 billion in Iranian assets and seeking about $270 billion in compensation for losses caused by U.S. and Israeli attacks during the conflict.
Controlling the Strait of Hormuz
A major sticking point has emerged in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow waterway through which nearly a fifth of the world’s oil supplies were transported before the conflict escalated. Iran is reportedly seeking formal recognition of its control over shipping in the strait, including the right to impose transit fees, while demanding that the United States end its blockade of Iranian ports. However, Washington insists the blockade will remain in place until a broader agreement is reached.
nuclear control
Another bone of contention involves Iran’s nuclear program. According to reports, the U.S. proposal requires Tehran to completely cease nuclear activities and transfer its stockpile of approximately 400 kilograms of highly enriched uranium to U.S. custody.Iran rejected both demands, arguing that any restrictions on its nuclear program could only be temporary and refusing to hand over its uranium stockpiles.
U.S. troops withdraw
Iran’s response also linked any ceasefire to broader regional issues. Tehran reportedly demanded that U.S. troops withdraw from the area and cease all hostilities, including Israeli military operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon. At the same time, the United States has sought to curb Iran’s support for regional allies such as Hezbollah and Hamas, while also pushing to limit Tehran’s ballistic missile program.
Trump calls proposal unacceptable
Within hours of Iran’s response becoming public, Trump flatly dismissed the claim.“I just read the response from the so-called ‘representative’ of Iran. I don’t like it – completely unacceptable! Thank you for your attention to this matter,” Trump wrote on The Truth Society, without elaborating on what parts of the proposal Washington considers unacceptable. The rejection immediately shocked global energy markets, sending oil prices up nearly $3 a barrel on concerns the standoff would prolong chaos in the Strait of Hormuz. The ongoing tensions also expose growing international concerns about the economic impact of the conflict. NATO allies have reportedly rejected U.S. calls to send naval forces to reopen the strait without a comprehensive peace agreement and an internationally mandated mission.Trump expected to discuss Iran with Chinese president Xi Jinping During his upcoming visit to Beijing, Washington sought Beijing’s help in forcing Tehran to reach a deal.israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the war was not over yet and insisted more work still needed to be done to dismantle Iran’s enrichment capabilities, ballistic missile program and regional proxy network.Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian responded by saying that Iran “will never bow to its enemies” and will continue to defend its national interests “with strength.”Despite diplomatic efforts, tensions in the region remain high. The United Arab Emirates said it intercepted two drones launched from Iran on Sunday, while Qatar condemned a drone attack on a cargo ship in its waters. Kuwait also reported enemy drones entering its airspace.Meanwhile, clashes between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah continue in southern Lebanon despite an earlier US-brokered ceasefire.
NEW DELHI: India’s school education system has solved most of the challenges of “getting kids into school” but is grappling with a trickier problem – keeping them there long enough to complete secondary and high school education.A new report by Niti Aayog shows that pressure points become more pronounced at higher levels of schooling – the gross enrollment ratio (GER) fell from 90.9 per cent in primary school to 58.4 per cent in high school, while the dropout rate at the secondary level rose sharply from 0.3 per cent in primary school to 11.5 per cent. The report, “India’s School Education System: Temporal Analysis and Policy Roadmap for Quality Improvement,” paints a picture of a large but uneven system of 1.471 million schools, 2.469 million students and about 101,000 teachers, with the most serious cracks now appearing after the primary level.
NITI report: Secondary school dropout rate jumps to 11.5%
It said today’s system is “strongest on basic access but weakest on continuity, inclusion and depth of learning”.The figures clearly illustrate the challenge. The GER in India is 90.9% at the primary level and 90.3% at the upper primary level, but drops sharply to 78.7% at the secondary level and further drops to 58.4% at the high school level.Transfer rates steadily decline as students advance through the system. While 92.2% of students progressed from primary school to primary school, the proportion between upper primary school and secondary school dropped to 86.6%, and between secondary school and high school to 75.1%. The second phase has become the biggest pressure point. The national primary school dropout rate is only 0.3%, and the dropout rate in the upper grades of primary school is 3.5%, but the secondary school dropout rate jumps to 11.5%.
“While near universality has been achieved at the primary level, enrollment at the upper secondary level… offers important opportunities to further expand participation,” the report states. “Strengthening transition rates at each stage, especially after the upper primary years… can Helps ensure smoother progression to school and continued participation in schooling. “The next phase of reforms can no longer focus solely on expanding enrollment or infrastructure, but must address “fragmented school structures, inadequate foundational learning, inclusion inequalities, gaps in teacher and leadership ecosystems, infrastructure disparities and governance weaknesses,” the report said.Structural inefficiencies remain severe. More than one-third of schools have fewer than 50 students, while more than 104,000 schools continue to operate as single-teacher institutions, serving nearly 3.4 million students. At the same time, the report documents significant progress in infrastructure development over the past decade. Currently, 91.9% of schools across the country are equipped with functional electricity, 94% with girls’ toilets, 64.7% with computers, 63.5% with internet connectivity and 30.6% with smart classrooms.
New Delhi: tamil nadu chief minister thalapati VijayDuring the oath-taking ceremony, the national anthem “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu” came third after the national anthem and national anthem, sparking controversy. This has drawn attention to the fact that government functions in Tamil Nadu begin and end with the playing of the national anthem.

Meanwhile, the Union Cabinet approved a proposal to amend the Prevention of Insult to National Honor Act to treat “Vande Mataram” on par with the national anthem “Jana Gana Mana”.Under the proposed amendments, insults or obstructions related to the national anthem could be subject to the same penalties that currently apply to the anthem, flag and constitution.“Violation of established tradition”The CPI, one of the parties supporting TVK in forming the government, strongly objected to the order of the songs and said ‘Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu’ must retain primacy in government rituals in the state.Communist Party of India state secretary M Veerapandiyan issued a letter after the oath-taking ceremony, saying the order went against the long-standing practice in Tamil Nadu, where official functions traditionally begin with “Tamil Thaai Vaazhthu” and end with the national anthem.“As per instructions issued by the Indian Parliament, the song ‘Vande Mataram’ was given priority and Tamil was given third place in the program of the swearing-in ceremony organized by the Tamil Nadu government, which is against the established practice. The Tamil Nadu government must explain to the public who is responsible for this lapse. The Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam must ensure that Thamizhthai Vaazhthu gets primacy. Mistakes like this must not be allowed to continue to happen. TN Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay and the interim Speaker will ensure that ‘Thamizhthai Vaazhthu’ is sung first and the national anthem is played at the end of tomorrow’s Parliament session to swear in members and all government functions and ceremonies. ” Veerapandiyan wrote in the letter.Veerapandiyan further claimed that the issue has historical and ideological implications. He said that during the freedom struggle, it was decided that ‘Vande Mataram’ could not be used as the national anthem as the song was dedicated to a specific deity and had sectarian religious characteristics.“In this case, the decision, allegedly taken on the instructions of the Lok Sabha, to give primary status to ‘Vande Mataram’ while placing Tamil prayers at the third position in the agenda of the oath-taking ceremony organized by the Tamil Nadu government is against the established tradition,” he claimed.TVK Keep distance from yourselfSoon after the controversy broke out, TVK distanced itself, claiming that the party did not agree to the third broadcast of the Tamil prayer song and supported the “convention” followed in Tamil Nadu.Minister Atav Arjuna said, “The Tamil prayer song that begins with ‘Neeraarum kadaludutha’ carries a centuries-old sense of pride. The song is a continuation of the wish ‘May it spread to all parts of the world’ and has been declared as the national anthem by the Tamil Nadu government.” This proud Tamil prayer song was first played at events in Tamil Nadu, including government functions. At the end of the event, the national anthem was played. This is common practice; appropriate practice. ““The new government in Tamil Nadu formed under the leadership of Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam does not see the practice differently. Against this backdrop, at the swearing-in ceremony of the Chief Minister and other ministers held today under the chairmanship of Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Alkal, Vande Mataram was played first, then the national anthem and finally the Tamil prayer song. This new approach does not suit Tamil Nadu. In mother Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu government formed under Tamil Nadu Vetri Kazhagam did not agree to play the Tamil prayer song for the third time,” he added. He further said that in the future, the national anthem will be played at the beginning and at the end of events.“When we pressed the Governor on this matter, it was expressed that it was the Governor’s responsibility to act on the new notification from the federal government. In this inevitable situation, the Tamil prayer song was played as the third song. However, this new approach will not be used in the future. Instead, as was done before, the event will begin with a Tamil prayer song and end with the national anthem! ” he said.Message to the People’s Party? The move is seen as a message to the Bharatiya Janata Party and is in line with India’s home ministry’s directive that the full version of the national anthem must be played at official functions and government functions. While Tamil Nadu complied with the Centre’s rules, it was not followed at the swearing-in ceremony of West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday. The event was historic as it was the first time a BJP government was formed in Bengal and was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and others.During the ceremony, Vijay stood beside opposition leaders in the Lok Sabha, who strongly criticized the Centre’s allegations that the Congress had omitted portions of Vande Mataram during the Jawaharlal Nehru period to heighten communal tensions.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has called for measures such as judicious fuel use, postponement of gold purchases and foreign travel to strengthen the economy.
New Delhi: congress leader Rahul Gandhi Monday launched scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi He urged citizens to postpone gold purchases, reduce fuel consumption and avoid traveling abroad, calling the appeal evidence a “failure”.“Yesterday, Modi asked the public to make sacrifices – don’t buy gold, don’t go abroad, use less petrol, reduce use of fertilizers and cooking oil, ride the metro, work from home. These are not sermons – but proof of failure,” Rahul Gandhi posted on X.

The leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha said the call exposed the limitations of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ten-year tenure.“For 12 years he has brought this country to a position where he now has to tell the public what to buy, what not to buy, where to go and where not to go. Each time, they put the blame on someone else so they could escape responsibility. Running the country is no longer within the purview of a compromised prime minister,” he added.Addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party rally in Hyderabad on Sunday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on the public to make a series of economic sacrifices, citing the ongoing conflict in West Asia and its pressure on India’s foreign exchange reserves. The Prime Minister urged citizens to reduce their petrol and diesel consumption, use metro services, carpool, switch to electric vehicles and work from home where possible. He also asked people to postpone gold purchases and overseas travel for a year, and reduce the use of cooking oil and fertilizers.“We have to save foreign exchange in any way,” Prime Minister Modi said at a rally, drawing parallels with behavioral changes during the Covid-19 pandemic. “During Covid-19 we have adopted working from home, virtual meetings, video conferencing and many other methods. We have become accustomed to them. Now they need to be restored.”The prime minister cast the measures as a national obligation during a global crisis, saying conflicts in West Asia had pushed up gasoline and fertilizer prices sharply and strained supply chains despite government intervention.
