6 lakes larger than Rhode Island: Lake Huron and Lake Michigan are nearly 15 times larger

Rhode Island may be the smallest state in the United States, but it pales in comparison to some of the largest lakes in North America. The state covers only 1,214 square miles, which is surprisingly small once you realize that the six freshwater lakes within or partially connected to the United States are actually much larger. Some of these lakes are so large that they behave more like inland seas, with rough waves, changeable weather and shorelines extending far beyond the horizon. Five of them are part of the Great Lakes system, and the sixth is on the U.S.-Canada border and contains thousands of islands. Together, these lakes revolutionized the perception of North American freshwater geography. Their size, wildlife and economic importance make them one of the most striking natural features on the continent.According to WorldAtlas, six freshwater lakes within or partially connected to the United States are larger than the entire state of Rhode Island.

Lake of the Woods covers approximately 1,679 square miles, making it larger than the state of Rhode Island. The lake spans northern Minnesota and into Canada and reportedly contains more than 14,500 islands. Experts say it has more islands than any other lake in the world. The lake is famous for fishing, especially walleye fishing, and attracts visitors year-round. Wildlife around the shoreline includes pelicans, herons, mallard ducks and black bears. On calm days, parts of the lake look almost ocean-like due to its vast open water.

lake ontario

At approximately 7,340 square miles, Lake Ontario is the smallest of the Great Lakes, but is still many times dwarfed by Rhode Island. The lake is part of the border between New York and the Canadian province of Ontario.Lake Ontario plays an important role in shipping as it connects the Great Lakes system to the Atlantic Ocean via the St. Lawrence Seaway. According to reports, approximately 9 million people rely on the lake for drinking water. The Niagara River also flows into it, closely connecting the lake to Niagara Falls.

Lake Erie covers an area of approximately 9,910 square miles and borders several U.S. states, including Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New York. It is the shallowest of the Great Lakes, which causes it to warm faster than the other lakes.Experts believe this warm water makes Erie the most biologically productive of the Great Lakes. Millions of migratory birds pass through the area each year, while rare species continue to survive on the islands within the lake. Freshwater jellyfish and freshwater sponges have also been reported to be found in its waters, surprising many visitors.

Lake Michigan covers an area of approximately 22,300 square miles, nearly 15 times the size of Rhode Island. It is also the only Great Lake located entirely within the United States.Major cities such as Chicago and Milwaukee sit along its coastline. The lake is famous for its huge freshwater dunes and long beaches, especially around Indiana Dunes National Park. The eastern coastline is also famous for fruit growing, as the lake helps regulate temperatures year-round.

Lake Huron

Lake Huron

Lake Huron is slightly larger than Lake Michigan, covering an area of approximately 23,007 square miles. The lake contains the famous Georgian Bay area and thousands of islands scattered throughout its waters.Experts estimate that there are nearly 1,000 shipwrecks beneath the surface of Lake Huron, all of which have been preserved in the cold freshwater conditions. The lake is also home to Wasaga Beach, which is reportedly the longest freshwater beach in the world. The large forested areas surrounding the lake continue to support diverse wildlife and a relatively undeveloped shoreline.

Lake Superior is the world’s largest freshwater lake by surface area, covering 31,700 square miles. It borders Ontario, Minnesota, Michigan, and Wisconsin. The lake is deeper and colder than the other Great Lakes, with some parts reaching depths exceeding 1,300 feet. Much of the surrounding coastline remains wild and sparsely populated, helping to protect habitat for moose, wolves, bobcats and woodland caribou.According to reports, standing on the shores of Lake Superior feels more like facing an ocean than a lake. The horizon seems endless, especially in bad weather. It’s hard to fully grasp its scale until you see it in person.

Trump, Xi Jinping hold talks in ‘biggest summit ever’

Beijing, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday began what Trump called “the largest summit ever” to discuss a wide range of issues, including the war with Iran and bilateral trade frictions.

Trump, Xi Jinping hold talks in ‘biggest summit ever’

Trump, who arrived in Beijing last night to a warm welcome, told Xi Jinping in their first meeting on Thursday that he looked forward to a “big discussion” with Xi.

“Some say this could be the largest summit ever,” Trump said in his opening remarks as he met with Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

“When things get hard, we solve them,” Trump said.

“We will have a great future together,” said the US president, who is on a three-day state visit to China.

Trump has repeatedly praised Xi Jinping as a great leader, state-run Xinhua News Agency reported.

The first meeting between the leaders of the two countries lasted more than two hours.

Trump will be accompanied on his visit to China by some of America’s top business leaders, such as Nvidia’s Jensen Huang, Apple’s Tim Cook, Tesla and SpaceX’s Elon Musk and BlackRock’s Larry Fink.

“I will be asking the great leader President Xi to ‘open up’ China and allow these talented people to work their magic and help the People’s Republic of China move to the next level,” Trump posted on social media.

According to the BBC, Trump said this would be his “first request” when he meets with Chinese leaders.

He said: “It is an honor to be your friend. Sino-US relations will be better than ever.”

Earlier, Xi Jinping welcomed Trump with a guard of honor and said that he expected 2026 to be a “historic and landmark year”, opening a new chapter in Sino-US relations.

In his opening speech, Xi Jinping said that China and the United States have more common interests than differences.

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the United States should be partners, not competitors. The two countries should help each other, prosper together, and find the right way for major countries to get along with each other.

Regarding the Sino-US trade friction, he said, “There are no winners in trade wars.”

President Trump’s visit comes amid growing economic and geopolitical uncertainty caused by conflicts in West Asia and subsequent global energy shocks, particularly in Asia.

Beyond West Asia, leaders of the world’s two largest economies are expected to focus on trade and tariffs, artificial intelligence and technology, Taiwan and U.S. arms sales to Taipei, and rare earth supply chains.

Trump’s visit to Beijing comes after trade friction flared up again after the Trump administration imposed steep tariffs on several Chinese goods and deepened tensions between the two countries over export controls, advanced technology and China’s dominance of the rare earths supply chain.

Ahead of Trump’s arrival, Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng and Scott Bessent completed a final round of trade talks in South Korea, details of which were unclear.

Trump was greeted at the airport by Chinese Vice President Han Zheng, a rare honor that went against normal diplomatic protocol.

Trump’s son Eric and daughter-in-law Laura and Musk stepped off Air Force One with Trump.

The two countries also plan to set up a trade committee with China to resolve differences between the two countries.

However, global focus on the summit will be on any possible outcome that could end the US-Israeli war against Iran and end the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. About one-fifth of the world’s total energy supply passes through this narrow waterway of the Gulf.

Trump’s visit comes after Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi visited Beijing for the first time since the war and held talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi.

After talks with Araghchi, Wang called on Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz as soon as possible, even as Iran appreciated Tehran’s pledge not to develop nuclear weapons, Trump’s top demand for ending the war.

Commenting on the Wang-Arachi talks, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said, “I want the Chinese to tell him what he needs to know. This is what you are doing in the Strait, and it is causing you to be isolated globally. You are the bad guys in this.”

China’s concerns about a war with Iran have grown, especially after Trump blocked Iranian ports and restricted Iranian oil exports to China.

China imports 10-15% of its crude oil from Iran.

The state media Global Times said in an editorial commenting on Trump’s visit to China that Xi Jinping’s multiple phone calls and meetings with Trump helped correct the development direction of bilateral relations and avoid hidden dangers at critical moments.

For China-US relations to truly and stably improve in the future, the most fundamental thing is to fully and faithfully implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries.

Hantaviruses: After hantaviruses, now noroviruses? How gut bacteria forced French cruise ship to be blocked

继汉坦病毒之后,现在是诺如病毒?肠道细菌如何迫使法国游轮被封锁

People walk past the British cruise ship Ambition in Bordeaux, France, where French authorities ordered 1,700 passengers and crew to stay on board due to a gastrointestinal illness outbreak

French authorities on Wednesday eased restrictions on passengers on the British cruise ship Ambition after tests confirmed that a gastrointestinal virus, possibly norovirus, rather than hantavirus, was behind an outbreak that sickened dozens of people on board. The cruise ship, operated by Ambassador Cruise Lines, had earlier been temporarily blocked in the port city of Bordeaux amid concerns it could be linked to a deadly hantavirus outbreak aboard the Dutch-flagged MV Hondius. However, French authorities said there was “no reason” to link the two incidents.

What happened on the ship?

Authorities said about 80 people aboard the Ambition have developed symptoms related to acute gastrointestinal infections since Monday. As of Wednesday morning, at least 48 passengers and one crew member were still experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, the Associated Press reported. The ship was carrying 1,233 passengers, mostly from the UK and Ireland, and 514 crew members.French officials said tests confirmed the outbreak was a “viral gastrointestinal infection.” No serious cases were reported and asymptomatic passengers were subsequently allowed to disembark.Passengers who are still sick are required to remain in isolation in the cabin. The ship departed from Shetland on May 6, calling at Belfast and Liverpool before arriving in Bordeaux. It was scheduled to continue to Spain before returning to Liverpool on 22 May.

Passenger dies during voyage

Concerns initially grew after a 92-year-old British passenger died on board. But health officials later said the man suffered from heart disease and his death did not appear to be related to a gastrointestinal outbreak.“No link to the gastroenteritis episode has been established at this stage,” authorities said, according to AFP.Officials added that in accordance with international maritime practice, the bodies of the passengers remained on board.

Passengers describe the situation on board

Authorities said the restrictions were imposed “out of an abundance of caution” amid global concerns over a separate hantavirus outbreak aboard the MV Hondius.Seos Guilidhe, a passenger from Belfast, told AFP via Facebook that life on the ship remained relatively normal despite the heightened hygiene measures.“We have extra hygiene guidelines in place on board. The situation is not as bad as it was during COVID. People are doing fine,” he said while “playing bingo” on board. He later added: “We were allowed to disembark and restrictions were lifted.”Others described more difficult conditions. “Being two of us in a cabin with a virus is a challenge,” one infected passenger wrote on Facebook, according to AFP.

Why authorities are cautious

This outbreak has attracted additional attention due to the recent hantavirus outbreak on board the MV Hondius, which triggered an international health response. The World Health Organization has confirmed eight laboratory cases of Andes virus on the Hondius, the only strain of hantavirus known to spread from person to person. Three passengers have died linked to the outbreak.Health authorities stress that there is currently no evidence linking the Ambition outbreak to hantavirus cases.Cruise ships frequently face gastrointestinal outbreaks, often related to norovirus. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recorded 23 cruise ship outbreaks last year.Gastroenteritis is often called the stomach flu. Its main symptoms include vomiting and diarrhea. The disease spreads easily but usually does not cause serious consequences, although it can occasionally lead to more serious problems such as dehydration. It is very different from hantaviruses, which have a high mortality rate but are only spread in rare cases and require close contact.

The photos show a woman walking in Tucson, Arizona, where Nancy lives.

“Is this #NancyGuthrie walking? In front of 5855 N Camino Escalante, November 2025,” the user wrote on the X. “I found this while searching on Google Earth.”

This user added It’s about “200m/218yrd” from Nancy’s home to that location.

user further wrote“, “I heard from interviews with neighbors that Nancy would walk around the neighborhood and then drive her Subaru to CVS. But Savannah said she could barely walk to the mailbox most days because she was in so much pain. But yes, I’ve seen her on crutches and that’s a fact. But it does look a lot like her.

Others weighed in in the comments section, with some saying the woman in the photo does look a lot like Nancy.

“It does look a lot like her. Maybe she’s on some strong painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs, or had an ESI (epidural steroid injection) procedure in her back to relieve the pain she was experiencing. When I could barely walk due to back pain, I had the surgery and it worked for me within a day. Maybe she’s been doing PT and gained more strength to walk short distances without assistive devices? I’m just throwing out the possibilities if this is indeed her,” one user commented. “My 93-year-old mom uses a walker sometimes and a cane other times and doesn’t need any help at any time. It depends on a lot of factors for her. All said about Nancy could be true,” said another.

Hantavirus outbreak: Deadly Andes strain found in cruise ship cases; eight confirmed cases

0

汉坦病毒爆发:游轮病例中发现致命的安第斯病毒株;确诊八例According to AFP, WHO “Eight cases have been laboratory-confirmed as Andes virus (ANDV) infection, two of which are possible, and one case has not yet been concluded and is undergoing further testing,” it said. The outbreak has so far resulted in the deaths of three people on board the ship, which set off from Argentina on a transatlantic voyage on April 1. The World Health Organization said two of the deceased had been diagnosed with Andes virus, while the third was listed as a probable case.Hantaviruses are usually spread through contact with the urine, saliva, or feces of infected rodents. There is currently no vaccine or specific treatment for the disease.

World Health Organization says public health risk stay low

The World Health Organization insists the public health risk remains “moderate” to passengers and crew on board, but “low” to the rest of the world. The World Health Organization believes the first infection likely occurred before the cruise began, as the first victim was a 70-year-old Dutch passenger who developed symptoms on April 6.The virus has an incubation period of one to six weeks.According to AFP, the unconclusive case involves an American passenger who has been deported back to the United States. The passenger is currently asymptomatic and is undergoing further testing after testing positive and negative.

U.S. patients are still being monitored

According to the Associated Press, more than 120 passengers and crew members were evacuated from the cruise ship and sent to various countries for quarantine and monitoring.Among them was Dr. Stephen Kornfeld, an oncologist from Oregon who was placed in a special biocontainment unit at the University of Nebraska Medical Center after a nasal swab showed inconclusive results.Kornfeld later told CNN, “I feel great, 100 percent.” He said he suffered flu-like symptoms earlier in the voyage, including chills, fatigue and night sweats, but has since recovered.Kornfeld has now been cleared to leave the biocontainment unit and be transferred to a standard quarantine facility along with other Americans under surveillance.U.S. health officials say the broader public risk remains low because hantaviruses do not spread easily from person to person, although the Andes strain found in the outbreak rarely spreads from person to person. The World Health Organization recommends that all passengers and crew on board continue to quarantine for 42 days.
