New Delhi: Women MPs from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Tuesday wrote to the Lok Sabha Speaker About Birlaurging him to take strict action against opposition lawmakers for allegedly committing “heinous acts” inside the House during last week’s session.In the letter, the lawmakers praised the speaker for maintaining order and decorum during the discussion of the motion to thank the president for his speech on February 4, but accused the opposition of causing chaos.“We express our deep gratitude and admiration for the exemplary manner in which you upheld and protected the dignity, decorum and sanctity of the Lok Sabha during the discussion of the motion of thanks in the address of the Honorable President on February 4, 2026. On that day, the entire House, and indeed the country, witnessed one of the most unfortunate and regrettable events in the Lok Sabha chamber,” the letter read.BJP lawmakers detailed the alleged misconduct, claiming opposition lawmakers disrupted proceedings in an unprecedented manner.“We saw members of the opposition not only entering the shaft of the House, but also climbing onto the Speaker’s desk, tearing documents and throwing them at the Speaker. Additionally, sadly, some female MPs behaved in an aggressive manner, carrying banners and placards and crossing to the other side of the House. Not only did they surround the Prime Minister’s seat, they also entered the Treasury bench where senior ministers were seated,” the letter said.“We, therefore, urge you to take the strictest action in accordance with the rules against those Opposition Members who committed such heinous acts in the House and brought disrepute to our democratic institutions,” it added.The letter from the BJP MP comes a day after the Congresswoman wrote to Birla accusing him of acting under pressure from the ruling party to defend Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s absence from the House.The controversy stems from Birla’s statement in the Lok Sabha last week that he had received “concrete information” suggesting that several MPs might approach the prime minister’s seat and take “unexpected action”. The Speaker said he therefore asked the Prime Minister not to appear in the House to reply to the motion of thanks.In her letter, the congresswoman strongly objected to the speaker’s remarks and accused him of making baseless accusations.“The Speaker, apparently under pressure from the ruling party to defend the Prime Minister’s absence, issued a statement making serious accusations against the party’s female MPs,” the MP said.“We are being targeted only because we have been fighting against the anti-people government of Prime Minister Narender Modi and holding him accountable. His absence from the House is not due to any threat from us but an act of fear,” the letter added.MPs further dismissed any suggestion they planned to disrupt the proceedings.“He (the Prime Minister) does not have the courage to face the opposition. We are members of the Indian National Congress, a party that stands for love, peace, constitutional values and human dignity. We do not believe in violence and intimidation. We are brave female elected representatives who will not be silenced by intimidation. ” said the letter signed by MPs including Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Jyothimani, R Sudha, Varsha Gaikwad and Jyotsna Mahant.“We believe transparency is the only way to restore the dignity of the Speaker’s office and the credibility of the House,” it said.Congress MPs also alleged bias in the disciplinary proceedings, noting that eight India Bloc MPs were suspended “at the behest of the ruling party” while a BJP MP was allowed to speak about the former prime minister in a “vulgar and obscene manner”.
