First solar eclipse of 2026: Can UAE residents see 'Ring of Fire' on February 17?
Skywatchers around the world are preparing for the first solar eclipse of 2026, which will occur on February 17, 2026/AI Image

Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, the world will witness the first eclipse The 2026 lunar eclipse, known as an “annular eclipse,” occurs when the moon is too far from Earth to completely cover the sun, leaving a visible ring of bright fire around its edge. However, for those of us in the UAE, there’s a problem: the “circular path” is extremely narrow and remote, almost completely cutting across Antarctica. Because the alignment occurs when the Sun is below the local horizon, the eclipse will not be visible at all from UAE skies. While we won’t see the skies darkening over the Burj Khalifa, the event is still an important global scientific milestone. Tomorrow, Tuesday, February 17, the world will witness the first solar eclipse of 2026.

What is a “Ring of Fire” solar eclipse?

The term “ring of fire” refers to the bright circle of sunlight that remains visible during an annular solar eclipse. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon moves between the Earth and the sun, temporarily blocking sunlight. However, during an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is slightly farther from Earth in its orbit. Due to the increased distance, the Moon appears smaller in the sky and cannot completely cover the Sun’s surface. Instead of plunging the sky into darkness like a total solar eclipse, the moon’s dark silhouette is surrounded by a thin, bright ring of sunlight. This glowing halo creates a dramatic “ring of fire” effect that captivates skywatchers. Unlike a total solar eclipse, an annular solar eclipse never produces complete darkness because part of the sun is always visible. This dramatic ring effect will last for approximately two minutes and twenty seconds at peak viewing locations during the event on February 17, 2026.

How to watch from UAE?

Just because you can’t see it from your balcony doesn’t mean you have to miss the show. With the eclipse taking place in one of the most inhospitable places on Earth, several space agencies and research stations in Antarctica are preparing to share the spectacle.

  • The partial stage begins at 1:56 pm UAE time, with the “Ring of Fire” peaking at 4:12 pm UAE time.
  • Find live stream NASA or virtual telescope project. These broadcasts will provide high-definition views from the frozen continent, allowing you to appreciate the celestial arrangement without having to endure a 14-hour flight or sub-zero temperatures.

The next solar eclipse is coming in August

If February feels like a missed opportunity, there’s good news. A total solar eclipse will occur on August 12, 2026, and will be visible in parts of Europe, including Spain and Iceland. While it’s still not visible from the United Arab Emirates, it’s geographically closer and may attract eclipse chasers from the region planning a trip.Additionally, there will be other astronomical highlights in 2026, including a lunar eclipse and meteor shower visible from UAE skies.

UAE partners with Elon Musk's Starlink to provide digital classrooms to 100 remote villages around the world
UAE partners with Starlink to expand global digital education coverage

The United Arab Emirates (UAE) announces a global strategic partnership with Starlink, a space exploration technologies corp.Designed to transform access to digital education around the world, especially for students living in remote and underserved communities with limited or no reliable connectivity. Launched in conjunction with the 2026 World Government Summit, the initiative represents an important step in connecting learners around the world with high-quality online education opportunities.

Why the United Arab Emirates Elon MuskStarlink is of great significance

Traditional education systems often leave students living in remote or infrastructure-poor areas with limited access to online resources, digital classrooms and modern tools, putting them at a disadvantage compared to their peers in well-connected areas. Satellite broadband, such as Starlink’s low-Earth orbit network, can deliver high-speed, low-latency internet when ground-based infrastructure is unavailable, opening the door to real-time learning, collaboration and global academic content.

By partnering with Starlink, the UAE is positioning itself at the forefront of the 21st century education revolution, championing a model where geographical location no longer limits children’s learning.

Elon Musk meets Pete Hegseth amid Iran’s Starlink crackdown; Trump considering action within Tehran?

How the UAE’s Starlink partnership with Elon Musk works: Combining satellite connectivity with digital classrooms

Under the initiative, Starlink will provide the underlying satellite broadband connectivity, while Digital School – a UAE-driven digital learning platform operating under the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiative – will provide structured education, platform and curriculum support.

Here’s how it works –

  • Satellite Internet Supply: The Starlink satellite constellation provides broadband connectivity to remote locations, allowing devices and learning platforms to operate even without terrestrial internet infrastructure.
  • Digital education delivery: Digital School will provide certified courses, learning content and training resources to transform basic connections into meaningful connections educational result.
  • Target site: The first phase focuses on connecting 100 remote and underserved sites around the world. It’s a scalable model that can grow over time based on partners’ success and readiness for impact.

Pilot implementation in Lesotho has already equipped schools with Starlink terminals as well as digital learning systems, teacher training programs and system education access tools. The partnership is in line with broader global efforts to bridge the digital divide in education, an issue highlighted by the deployment of Starlink’s technology in other countries where it has already facilitated learning opportunities. For example:

  • In Malaysia, Starlink connections have been deployed to rural schools to increase online learning opportunities.
  • In Malawi, satellite broadband has connected dozens of rural schools and clinics to reliable internet, providing online educational resources and community services.
  • In the Indian state of Gujarat, the Starlink protocol is expanding connectivity in remote areas, supporting broader digital inclusion goals.

These examples illustrate how satellite internet is increasingly being used to fill connectivity gaps, making online education more widely available, from basic courses to advanced collaboration. Traditional broadband expansion can be slow and expensive, especially in mountainous, rural or sparsely populated areas.

Satellite systems get around these limitations by providing connectivity directly in the sky, which is often the only viable option beyond the reach of fiber optic lines. With broadband speeds fast enough to support video conferencing, real-time collaboration and interactive education platforms, students can attend live classes, access global resources and interact with educators and peers across borders.Connectivity alone is not enough. By combining satellite internet with comprehensive education platforms such as digital schools, this model ensures teachers are well-equipped, content is relevant, and learning paths are structured, rather than simply providing access without curriculum support.

Challenges and road ahead for UAE’s partnership with Elon Musk’s Starlink

Although the initiative is promising, there are still some challenges in expanding digital education globally:

  • Equipment availability: Ensure students have the appropriate equipment (computers, tablets) to use satellite internet effectively.
  • Digital literacy: Train teachers, learners and communities to make the most of digital tools and platforms.
  • Sustainability: Provide funding for long-term operations, maintenance, and support of remote deployments.

However, the UAE’s strategy of combining connectivity infrastructure with educational design, teacher training and local cooperation frameworks aims to comprehensively address these factors. The UAE-Starlink digital education partnership embodies a global vision where access to quality education transcends physical and financial barriers.By combining one of the world’s most advanced satellite networks with a structured digital learning ecosystem, the program advances an inclusive model that can reshape how underserved communities learn, connect and participate in the 21st century economy. The effort also demonstrates how public-private partnerships in technology and education can unlock new opportunities and integrate with broader global conversations, such as those at the Education Futures Forum on the future of learning and the importance of equitable access at scale. The UAE’s partnership with Starlink to expand global digital education is more than just a connectivity project; it is a strategic push to bridge education gaps, empower remote learners and innovate global learning. By leveraging satellite technology and structured digital platforms, the initiative can create a blueprint for the next era of education.

'Pick up the baton': Mani Shankar Aiyar's campaign for Pinarayi Vijayan sparks controversy; Congress draws line

New Delhi: congress leader Mani Shankar Aiyar New controversy sparked on Sunday after praising Kerala chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan And expressed hope that the left-wing government will return in the upcoming parliamentary elections. The move comes as the Congress party seeks to regain power in Kerala in polls due in May this year.Addressing an international seminar titled ‘Vision 2031: Development and Democracy’, Aiyar asked Vijayan to “take up the baton dropped by the Congress party”.He added that it was ironic that the country that had made the most commendable progress towards achieving this goal was Kerala, which was ruled by a “Marxist-Leninist party”.“I don’t know if it’s a compliment or an insult, but I deeply regret the absence of my party colleagues from this event, which is a state occasion and therefore a national occasion. While Kerala is the first Panchayati state in practice, it is only second in law,” Aiyar said.“So, with my confidence that the chief minister will continue in office, I make another plea – to strengthen the position of Kerala as the best Panchayati state in the country. The state laws should be revised based on practical experience, Thomas Isaac’s insights, the five-volume report chaired by me and VK Ramachandran’s note on district planning circulated by the Planning Commission when it was really supporting the Panchayati Raj,” he added.“So, Chief Minister Vijayan, I must fall at your feet and request you to pick up the baton dropped by the Congress party. Thank you and may Kerala prosper,” he further said.Vijayan described Aiyar’s remarks as “charming words” that resonated with the current context.Aiyar’s observations reflected today’s situation and reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening grassroots democracy, he said in a social media post about the Vision 2031 international conference.“We are united in the belief that democracy can only thrive when power belongs to the people. We will continue to strengthen our local institutions as the heartbeat of growth. ” said the leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist).‘It has nothing to do with Congress’Meanwhile, Aiyar’s remarks did not go down well with the Congress leadership.Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera tried to distance the party from Aiyar’s remarks, saying he had no association with the Congress in the past few years.Hera said in a post on X that Aiyar “speaks and writes purely in a personal capacity.”“Mr. Mani Shankar Aiyar has no connection with the Congress party in the past few years. He speaks and writes purely in his personal capacity,” Hera said.Congress general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh also refuted Aiyar’s remarks and said the United Democratic Front (UDF) will return to power in Kerala.“There is no doubt. The people of Kerala will bring back the UDF for more accountable and responsive governance. They also know that the LDF and the BJP are secret partners,” he said.

'Guru Dakshina means flag': Priyank Kharge files 'money laundering scam' charges against RSS

New Delhi: Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge on Sunday accused Kuomintang He was suspected of “money laundering”, questioned his source of income, and asked why he didn’t pay taxes.Speaking at an event here, Hager alleged financial irregularities and demanded greater accountability from the organization.“It (RSS) has a network of more than 2,500 organizations, they are from the United States, the United Kingdom. They take money from them. I tell you – these people are laundering money,” he said.Questioning its funding, he added, “They want us to be good citizens and pay income tax, but they want to remain free. How is that possible? We’re going to have to question that.”Haq said the laws and constitution that apply to everyone in the country should also apply to the RSS. Later, speaking to reporters, he noted that the RSS was an unregistered organization and asked “whether they are above the law or the constitution.”“It is good that all organizations should be governed by law and constitution, whether it is RSS or any other organization. Are they above law and constitution. Mohan Bhagwat (RSS president) said it (RSS) is an individual group. Same goes for Bangalore Club, are they not registered? Don’t they pay taxes?” he further asked. He said his question was why the RSS was not registered and “where did their Guru Dakshina (donations) come from.”Haggar said, “If we ask RSS about the source of money, they told us that we will get Guru Dakshina. But, when I did some research, according to them, Guru Dakshina means ‘flag’. So, tomorrow morning, if I also hoist the blue flag and collect money, I will ask the government and them (RSS) if they agree.” Therefore, no one can escape unfounded remarks. From now on, I will not give up until this RSS organization is registered in accordance with the constitution and law.“Who is paying? Why (RSS) is not paying tax? When everyone else’s every rupee is being counted, why is there no accountability for their (RSS) money,” he asked.Haq also hit out at the organization over the issue of patriotism, saying: “The RSS has not hoisted the national flag at their offices for 52 years. They teach us patriotism. ““The Ramayana written by Valmiki is different; what is happening now is different. Politicians and religious leaders are talking about religion whatever they want. No religion incites violence. RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat advocates that a person should have three children, but he is not married. Yet, he talks about raising other people’s children. So, the BJP keeps talking inside and outside, sending the children of the poor to the streets,” Haggar said.Meanwhile, Haqq launched a sharp attack on the demand for conferring Bharat Ratna on Veer Savarkar, asking why a man who he said was “anti-Bharat” should receive the country’s highest civilian honour. In a post shared on X, Haq posted a long list of questions targeting Savarkar’s role in the freedom struggle. His attack was in response to comments made by RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat on February 8 during a two-day lecture series titled “100 Years of Sangh Journey – New Horizons”. Replying to a question on the postponement of the Savarkar Award, Bhagwat said the award would enhance the prestige of Bharat Ratna itself. Bhagwat further said that he was not a member of the decision-making committee but would raise the issue if given an opportunity.

After the recent update, can you use WhatsApp Web voice and video calls in the UAE?

After the recent update, can you use WhatsApp Web voice and video calls in the UAE?
WhatsApp web calling launched globally: What UAE users need to know

WhatsApp Voice and video calling capabilities have begun rolling out globally WhatsApp Weballows users to make and receive calls directly from the browser without installing a desktop application. The update brings the long-awaited calling feature to the web version of the platform, complementing its existing messaging and media sharing capabilities.

What features does WhatsApp web calling offer?

The new calling update for WhatsApp Web supports:

  • one-on-one voice and video call Directly through a web browser.
  • End-to-end privacy encryption, similar to mobile and desktop apps.
  • The call icon in chat allows users to initiate calls without opening WhatsApp on their phone or desktop app.

The rollout is still in phased testing, meaning not all users will see it, but Meta is gradually expanding access. Future enhancements are also planned, such as group calling and call linking, allowing multiple users to join network calls.

United Arab Emirates Regulations: WhatsApp Online Calling Rules

Despite this global update, voice and video calls via WhatsApp, whether on mobile, desktop or web, remain blocked in the UAE under current laws.

Why are WhatsApp calls blocked in the UAE?

The Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA) enforces strict Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) rules that only allow licensed or approved providers to offer Internet calling services. WhatsApp’s internet calling is not on the approved list, so telecom operators like Etisalat and du have blocked these features.

This restriction applies to:

  • WhatsApp voice calls
  • WhatsApp video call
  • Internet calling feature on WhatsApp Web

In contrast, text messaging, media sharing, file transfer and other non-voice features on WhatsApp and WhatsApp Web work fine in the UAE.

WhatsApp alternatives available to UAE residents

Although WhatsApp calling is restricted locally, there are legal alternatives that support voice and video calling in the UAE –

  • version: Residents often use licensed VoIP applications to make Internet calls.
  • GoChat, Voico and similar local VoIP providers: Comply with UAE Telecommunications Regulations.
  • Zoom, Google Meet and Microsoft Team: Popular video conferencing tools that work well on UAE networks.

These applications comply with UAE VoIP regulations and are widely used for personal and professional communications.

Why are there WhatsApp restrictions in the UAE?

The restrictions on internet calls in the UAE stem from:

  • Telecom licensing policies require VoIP services to be provided by or coordinated with licensed operators.
  • Provide security and compliance oversight of communications traffic.
  • Protect the revenue model of telecom providers built around traditional voice services.

Despite periodic speculation about policy changes, the UAE continues to strictly enforce these VoIP regulations as of early 2026.

Future: Will WhatsApp calling work in the UAE?

WhatsApp web calling is available to users globally where it has been launched. WhatsApp voice and video calls remain blocked in the UAE, across web, mobile and desktop clients. Messaging and media features on WhatsApp Web remain fully available. Users who require local calling capabilities should use an approved VoIP application such as BOTIM or Zoom. The industry has occasionally talked about regulatory changes or collaborations that could open the door to future WhatsApp calls, but no formal policy shift has been announced as of 2026, and TDRA’s VoIP framework maintains current restrictions. Meanwhile, WhatsApp Web’s new voice and video calling features are technically available in markets where regulations allow it, but UAE residents will still need other apps to make local internet calls.

New Delhi: Pakistan’s 61-run loss to India has put their T20 World Cup campaign in jeopardy and they may be eliminated based on the upcoming Group A results. India qualified for the Super Eights with three wins from three matches, while Pakistan finished third with two wins and one loss.

T20 World Cup: India humiliates Pakistan again

The U.S.’s victory over Namibia further intensified the race, with the final game of the group crucial for Pakistan’s avoidance of relegation. Currently, the United States and Pakistan have the same number of points (4). However, thanks to a better net run rate, Team USA finds itself second in the table. Pakistan head coach Mike Hesson admitted the defeat was tough for the players, saying: “There is a very disappointed group of people in the dressing room now because they know what this means to Pakistan.” He added that despite India’s recent victory, the day’s performance was better. “We knew it was a big tournament, Pakistan versus India. We had obviously won five games before today so we were confident but today we were beaten,” he added.Riding on Ishan Kishan’s 77 runs, India won 175-7 with support from: Suryakumar Yadav and Shivam Dubey. Pakistan suffered an early defeat 13-3 and were bowled out for 114, with Usman Khan’s top score of 44. Hesson defended the decision to bowl first, saying: “I thought the ball initially spun a lot and we got off to a good start, but I thought the way Kishan played, he took the game away from us.”Now, Pakistan must beat Namibia in their final group match on Wednesday to avoid relegation. If they lose, they are eliminated. If the match is called off due to heavy rain, the two teams will share the points and Pakistan will qualify for the Super Eights.Their fate could also depend on other results, including games between the United States and the Netherlands, which could affect qualifying standings.Hesson urged the team to recover as soon as possible, saying: “We have to pick ourselves up and make sure we perform well in two or three days.” Confidence remains, he added, “We’ve played some good cricket ahead of this World Cup so we’re confident of doing well in the tournament.”
