In calming Gary Kirsten, Namibia finds 'human touch'

New Delhi: Namibia’s training ahead of their T20 World Cup opener against Netherlands followed a familiar script of cone placement, tossing and cutting into the outfield. Yet, standing far away from the hustle and bustle, arms crossed and eyes following every movement, was a figure of quiet authority. Gary Kirsten Although he didn’t wear Namibia’s colours, his mark on the team was obvious.Push boundaries with our YouTube channel. Subscribe now!Former India head coach and South Africa opener Kirsten has joined Namibia as a consultant for the T20 World Cup. It’s a role that suits him: low noise, high impact. For a team still torn between staff ambition and elite-level consistency, Kirsten’s arrival provides reassurance and an edge.

T20 World Cup group details: Who can advance to the Super 8

captain of namibia Gerhard Erasmus It’s clear what Kirsten brings to the table. First, there’s obvious pedigree. As a player, Kirsten has toured extensively across the Indian subcontinent and served as a coach in the IPL, most memorably guiding MS Dhoni’s India to victory in the 2011 ODI World Cup.“He (Kirsten) has a wealth of experience. He brings a winning edge to our campaign. He also brings a wealth of knowledge about different areas in India,” Erasmus said.Apart from the trophies, what resonates most with this Namibian group is the way Kirsten works. Erasmus suggested that the impact was subtle but profound. “On the management side, it’s great to have such great mentor-coaches who really enjoy bringing the human side to their coaching first and who really enjoy connecting on a deeper level with their players,” Erasmus said. For a team like Namibia, where players often balance cricketing dreams with semi-professional realities, a player-first approach carries even greater weight.“That’s what we have the most respect for Gary and all the other coaches (the player-first approach). Cricket is so much about conditions and it’s great to have him,” said the 30-year-old Namibian captain.

PSLV-C62 accident: Failure analysis committee to be established soon

BENGALURU: The Indian Research Organization has been analyzing data from the failed PSLV-C62 since January 12 and is expected to formally set up a Failure Analysis Committee (FAC) to investigate the cause of the accident and recommend corrective measures soon.Nearly a month has passed since the failure, the second in multiple attempts by PSLV, and the analysis so far has been done by an expert committee internally known as the ‘Data Analysis Committee’ or DAC, multiple sources confirmed to TOI.

Phase 3 Trouble Strikes Again: Inside ISRO PSLV-C62 Deviation and What Failure Means

“A committee of experts is analyzing the data,” ISRO chairman V Narayanan told TOI, without elaborating further. One scientist said the DAC is tasked with analyzing telemetry, ground station records, logs and processing files and putting them on a timeline before any higher-level investigation begins. To this end, the DAC has about six minutes of flight information, with recording intervals accurate to two milliseconds, another scientist said. He described it as a large amount of material that could reveal the health of the vehicle when an anomaly occurred.Isro has not yet indicated the timeline for the launch of the next PSLV built by the HAL-L&T alliance, which was initially expected to take place in the first quarter of this year. Multiple sources confirmed that the mission has been put on hold until analysis of PSLV-C62 failures is completed. “Committee [DAC] It is currently in the final stages of analysis and once the process is completed, the FAC will be formally established. One source said this could happen quickly, in just a few days. “Unlike the DAC, which is headed by the former Chairman of ISRO and consists of an in-house team, the FAC will also comprise experts from outside the Department of Space (DoS).The scientist said that in addition to analyzing data from the PSLV-C62 mission to determine what exactly happened during the mission, the DAC’s second priority will be to examine any links to the previous failure (PSLV-C61 in May 2025) and then conduct a comprehensive review of the 33-year-old PSLV vehicle. “After two repeated failures, it was necessary to revisit the entire PSLV again,” the scientist said, adding that the role of the DAC was to provide all the information the FAC might need to perform its analysis.“There will be data from telemetry, ground stations, tracking data and other information about the process and testing, all of which will need to be analyzed and presented correctly for the FAC to start working,” the scientist said. While ISRO has not officially said anything about launching other launch vehicles, the agency has been conducting rigorous reviews before all planned missions. It is preparing for the GSLV mission, while the planned SSLV mission is said to be on hold as its second stage is identical to PSLV’s third stage (PS3), The Times of India reported last week.On January 12, after normal liftoff and second-stage performance, PSLV-C62 malfunctioned on PS3, resulting in failure. “…Towards the end of the third phase, we saw little more disturbance in the vehicle’s roll rate, followed by deviations in the flight path. We are analyzing the data and we will come back at the earliest,” Narayanan said shortly after.

They will take on a United States team at the Sinhala Sports Complex on Tuesday night, a team full of confidence after a good performance against India at the Wankhede Stadium. In the last World Cup, the United States sent Pakistan home from the group stage with a Super Series victory in Dallas. Mohammed Mohsin, the American leg-breaking bowler originally from Pakistan, recalled that match in 2024 even though he did not play in it.“If anything, we are a stronger team than we were then. If you look at the ODI World Cup qualifying table, we are on top now. We hope to win tomorrow,” Mohsin said, indicating that the team will not be beaten easily. For Pakistan, their biggest problem against the Netherlands is their shaky middle order. Paisman Salman Mirza said the match was an “eye-opener”. “We will try not to make the same mistake. We will learn from it and play good cricket,” Salman said.It will be interesting to see if the team sticks with its veteran stars Babar Azam In middle order. ‘Without him, trade deal wouldn’t have happened’: Goyal praises US envoy Al Gore

“The United States may not have won yesterday’s game (T20 World Cup against India), but I must say it was a great performance for a country that doesn’t know anything about cricket but only started playing cricket a few years ago,” Goyal said.Recalling a relaxed exchange with the ambassador during the game, he added: “Sergio was there to enjoy the game…Sergio pointed out a very important factor – the United States lost the game by 18%, and I made a very humble request to him, suggesting that if you set reciprocal tariffs to zero, you could potentially win the game.”Goyal said he has been impressed by the progress Team USA has made in the sport. “I’m definitely surprised by how well the US Cricket Team is doing…” he said, referring to the sport’s meteoric rise in a country that had only been exposed to the sport in recent years.India and the United States issued a joint statement on Saturday outlining the details of the recently announced trade agreement, under which tariffs on Indian products entering the United States will be reduced from 50% to 18%. This progress follows months of negotiations that began in February 2025. For India, the agreement will reduce customs duties on a range of goods including textiles and apparel, leather and footwear, plastic and rubber products, organic chemicals, home décor, handmade products and select machinery. With regard to the United States, India will eliminate or reduce tariffs on a full range of U.S. industrial products and a wide range of agricultural and food products, including dried distillers grains, red sorghum for animal feed, tree nuts, fresh and processed fruits, soybean oil, and wine and spirits.

Trump threatens to halt launch of US-Canada bridge; demands halt until 'compensation' talks

US President Donald Trump has threatened to block the opening of a new bridge linking the United States and Canada, marking another escalation in his criticism of the neighboring country after he suggested Canada become the 51st US state.Trump said the United States should own “at least half” of the Gordie Howe International Bridge, which is still under construction and connects the Canadian province of Ontario to the US state of Michigan. An article published by Trump in “Truth Social” accused Canada of treating the United States “unfairly” and claimed that Canada “does not compensate enough.” He wrote: “It is well known that Canada has treated the United States very unfairly for decades. Now, things are improving rapidly in the United States! But imagine Canada is building a giant bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They had both Canadian and American aspects, and of course, it was built with almost no American content. He further warned that he would prevent the bridge from opening unless Canada negotiated with the United States and provided adequate compensation for what the United States “gave them.”“I will not allow this bridge to open until the United States is fully compensated for everything we have given them, and it is important that Canada treats the United States with the fairness and respect we deserve,” Trump wrote in the Truth Society post.He later added that the United States would “begin negotiations immediately.”The Republican president also reiterated his complaint that Canada owns both sides of the bridge and used “virtually” no American products in its construction. He wrote, “It’s no secret that the country of Canada has been very unfair to the United States for decades. Now, things are rapidly improving in the United States! But imagine Canada is building a giant bridge between Ontario and Michigan. They have both Canadian and American sides, and of course, build it with almost no American content.”Construction on the $4.7 billion bridge, named for the late Canadian-born National Hockey League great Gordie Howe, began in 2018 and is expected to open later this year. The bridge is fully funded by Canada and will be jointly owned by the Canadian government and the state of Michigan, according to a fact sheet released by the Windsor-Detroit Bridge Authority.Trump also criticized Canada’s broader foreign policy direction, writing: “Now, on top of that, Prime Minister (Mark) Carney wants a deal with China – which will eat Canada alive. We’ll just get the rest! I don’t think so.”Tensions increased after Washington threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canada after Carney visited Beijing last month and announced a preliminary trade deal with China. The U.S. leader also reiterated claims that Beijing would “end all ice hockey in Canada,” a statement widely refuted by critics. This is not the first time Trump has expressed dissatisfaction with the trade arrangements between the two countries. Speaking at the 56th annual World Economic Forum summit in Davos last month, he said Canada “gets a lot of freebies” from Washington and suggested the country wasn’t showing enough gratitude.Since returning to office in January 2025, Trump has repeatedly clashed with Canada on trade issues. He had earlier called for the United States to annex Canada, but he has largely backed away from that idea in recent months.Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney warned at Davos that the U.S.-led global governance system was experiencing “fractures,” widely interpreted as an allusion to Trump’s policies, while calling for middle-level countries to work more closely together.

How robot dogs will assist police with crowd control during the 2026 FIFA World Cup

New Delhi: Robot dogs will be deployed to assist police operations during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Mexican authorities have announced as part of measures to tighten security at the event. These four-legged robotic units are designed to venture into high-risk areas and forward live video footage to law enforcement teams, allowing officials to remotely assess situations during World Cup-related operations.

The month-long global event is scheduled to run from June 11 to July 19 and will be co-hosted by Mexico, the United States and Canada. The robot dogs were purchased by the Guadalupe City Council, located in the Monterrey metropolitan area, one of the World Cup host areas, at a cost of 2.5 million pesos (approximately $145,000). Monterrey will play the game at the BBVA Stadium, which will be temporarily renamed Estadio Monterrey during the tournament.Video released by local authorities showed one of the robots navigating an abandoned building, ascending stairs with precision while transmitting live images to police officers following from a distance.During the demonstration, the robot dog faced an armed man and used a built-in speaker to instruct him to drop his weapon, demonstrating its role in frontline assessment and de-escalation.Guadalupe Mayor Hector Garcia said the purpose of the robots is to assist police during initial intervention and reduce direct exposure to potential threats. “The goal is to protect the physical safety of our officers,” he said, adding that the machines would be deployed whenever there was a disturbance or confrontation.Monterrey Stadium is scheduled to host four World Cup matches during the tournament.

What is an air taxi? How do they work in India? CII report explained

New Delhi: A pilot air taxi corridor connecting Gurgaon, Connaught Place and Jewar International Airport could significantly reduce travel time in the national capital region, a new report by the Confederation of Indian Industry said. The study said advanced air mobility solutions, including electric vertical take-off and landing aircraft, could help India alleviate infrastructure bottlenecks by shifting some urban travel to lower-altitude airspace. The report recommends that air taxis initially operate from the rooftops of hospitals and commercial buildings and be deployed for time-sensitive tasks such as medical logistics and organ transport. Strategic co-location with hospitals, metro stations and commercial areas will facilitate integration with existing transport networks, the report said.Citing severe pressures on ground transport, the report sees advanced air mobility as the logical next step for Indian cities. It recommended setting up a new regulatory body within the DGCA to oversee the rollout of these services. The report, released by Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu, outlines a phased plan to safely integrate next-generation air traffic into the aviation ecosystem and address urban congestion. The launch was attended by senior officials and industry leaders including DGCA Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai and Airports Authority of India Chairman Vipin Kumar.

.

On the infrastructure front, the report makes a strong case for rooftop vertical airports in major metros. “As India prepares for advanced air mobility, rooftop vertical airports offer an efficient, scalable and cost-effective solution, especially in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru,” the report said. As land acquisition for ground-based vertiports is costly and slow, rooftops on commercial centers, hospitals, technology parks and residential buildings are seen as a practical alternative to leverage underutilized real estate. However, regulatory hurdles remain. “Routine commercial vertical takeoff and landing from rooftops is not yet permitted under current DGCA regulations and any future launch will depend on the evolution of the applicable regulatory framework and safety assessments,” the report states. It recommends a sequential rollout, starting with drone delivery, followed by medical logistics and organ transport, and finally air ambulance services. On the funding front, the report calls on public financial institutions, including SIDBI, banks and government funding agencies, to create dedicated financing instruments for advanced air mobility. These may include sector-specific infrastructure funds, risk leasing models or credit enhancement facilities to reduce investment risk and support long-term capital flows.
