She claimed that the voters’ names had been deleted in the operation and said she had moved the matter from Kolkata to Delhi to the Calcutta High Court and the Supreme Court. “I want people’s rights to be protected,” she added.“Those who target Bengal and try to divide the people should go to hell,” the West Bengal chief minister said, according to the Press Trust of India news agency. Her remarks come amid growing political controversy over the electoral roll review exercise, which the TMC has repeatedly said is an attempt to remove the names of genuine voters, especially those from minority-dominated areas, ahead of the assembly elections. The chief minister referred to Bengal’s long tradition of communal harmony and said the country would not allow attempts to divide the society to succeed.“Bangla believes in unity. Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Christians, everyone lives together. We will not allow anyone to destroy this social fabric,” Mamta said. “I stand with everyone in Bengal irrespective of caste, community and creed. I will continue this fight. We will not let Modi take away our rights,” she added.Manta also accused the Center of trying to control state governments. “You are trying to impose control of our government, you are trying to impose presidential rule. She added that she would not be afraid: “Jo darte hain, wo marte hain (Those who are afraid are doomed). “Jo ladte hain, wo zindagi mein kamyab hote hain (Those who struggle succeed in life).” The 294-member West Bengal Assembly elections will be held in two phases on April 23 and 29, with counting of votes scheduled for May 4.The TMC also approached the Calcutta High Court on Friday challenging the transfer of several IAS and IPS officers in West Bengal by the Election Commission of India after the announcement of the assembly polls.
