PJM, the largest U.S. grid operator, said on Friday that the power system was under severe stress. The grid operator said it was working under a federal emergency alert to reduce power demand in its service area.

Why does PJM ask people to use less electricity?

PJM said several issues occurred simultaneously. Many generators are currently out of service, reducing available power. high voltage transmission lines According to Reuters, these facilities are severely overloaded, making it difficult to get power to where it is needed. A prolonged period of intense heat has left millions of people using air conditioners and electricity demand well above normal.

What actions has PJM taken?

PJM has asked utilities to reduce electricity usage for customers who have signed contracts to reduce power usage during emergencies. These customers are typically large businesses or industrial users who agree in advance to cut power usage when the grid is under stress.

Pajamas electricity About 67 million people, according to Reuters. Its power grid covers the mid-Atlantic states, parts of the South and Washington, DC.

PJM may not be able to meet power demand

Devdiscourse said PJM said it would not be able to fully meet expected power demand due to current pressures on the grid. The company has begun plans to manage and reduce electricity demand to keep the power system stable.

PJM said it is working closely with utility companies to reduce electricity use in a controlled manner. The goal is to prevent the grid from becoming unstable and keep power flowing safely across the region.

People and businesses should remain vigilant

Residents and businesses in affected areas have been advised to prepare for possible changes in electricity usage as PJM implements its demand reduction plan. The company said the measures were designed to protect the reliability of the grid.

Electricity prices soar

According to Reuters, spot wholesale electricity prices in northern Virginia have climbed to more than $2,000 per megawatt hour this week. Under normal circumstances, wholesale electricity prices in the PJM market are about $40 per megawatt hour.

Northern Virginia has the largest concentration of data centers in the world, making it one of the largest electricity consumers in the United States USA.

Why have electricity prices increased so much?

PJM’s operational data shows the biggest cause is congestion on high-voltage transmission lines. Because these transmission lines are so congested, sending electricity through the grid becomes more expensive.

The continued hot weather has led to a sharp increase in the use of air conditioners in the region. The surge in electricity demand is putting more pressure on an already strained power system.

Grid operators have initiated emergency demand reduction measures to avoid bigger problems, while wholesale electricity prices have risen to unusually high levels.
