Who is Ted Carter Jr.? Ohio president resigns, admits ‘improper relationship’ with resource seeker

Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. resigned after revealing to university trustees that he had an inappropriate relationship with an individual who sought public resources to help his personal career.

this Ohio The State University Board of Trustees acknowledged Carter’s resignation in a statement released March 9. The university said Carter recently informed the board of trustees of the relationship and tendered his resignation.

“The Board of Trustees thanks the Chancellor for his contributions to the University over the past two years,” the university said, citing the Civic Education 2035 strategic plan, improvements in national rankings, increases in research funding and the launch of multiple new scholarship programs. Additionally, the university recognized the team the president has assembled to enhance Ohio State’s position as a national leader.

Ohio State announced it will provide more details on the leadership transition in the coming days.

Walter Carter Jr. issued a statement

Carter issued a statement after his resignation: “I have made the difficult decision to resign as president of Ohio State University for personal reasons. I disclosed to the Board of Trustees that I made a mistake in allowing inappropriate access to Ohio State University leadership.”

Carter was appointed as Ohio’s 17th president in 2023, succeeding Christine Johnson. He takes office on January 1, 2024.

Prior to his tenure at Ohio State, Carter served as chancellor of the University of Nebraska system, overseeing four campuses with nearly 70,000 students, faculty and staff.

“I believe we have come a long way during my tenure at Ohio State, and I am sorry that I cannot continue to serve as your president,” Carter said in the statement. “The students, faculty, and staff at this university are among the best in the world, and the 2035 Civic Education Strategic Plan positions Ohio State for success in the years to come.”

“I have developed a strong working relationship with the Board of Trustees, and I am grateful for their support and guidance. Linda and I leave Ohio State University with a sense of gratitude and appreciation for this wonderful community. I am honored to serve as the 17th president of this university, and we wish the university continued success.”
