Government contractors representing Democrats have centered their campaigns around “fixing fundamental problems” and a vision for a “new District.” Throughout her career, Sampath has worked to strengthen government programs and services to citizens.

Sampath continues his studies at university Southern California (University of Southern California), where she received national recognition in 2015 as student body president.

During her tenure at USC, she advocated for issues related to campus safety, diversity and student rights, while also speaking out against racism and harassment.

Speaking about the D.C. mayoral race, she said the moment is significant both personally and for the broader community.

“My top priority is to ensure our city fulfills its basic promises to residents by filling potholes, stopping catastrophic wastewater leaks in the Potomac River, lowering prices, and shortening 911 wait times,” Sampass said on her campaign website.

She added: “I will solve problems, implement promises, reduce inequities, and invest in making Washington, D.C., work for everyone because people deserve a mayor who keeps his promises.”

Washington, D.C., is largely run by Democrats and has not had a Republican mayor since mayoral elections began in 1975.

Pointing out the failures of the SAR government, the shortcomings of the current leadership were particularly evident during the snowstorm in early February, when residents were unable to go out, disabled people were trapped, and employees suffered financial losses because the city was unable to provide basic services.

Janice Lewis George, Kenya McDuffie, Gary Goodweather, Robert L. Gross and Rhonda Hamilton are also candidates in the mayoral race.
