  1. According to reports, Lagishetti Spandana, a master’s student at Elmhurst University in Illinois, was using chicago An elevated transit system, known as the “L”.
  2. She fell approximately 25 feet, causing serious injuries, according to authorities and family members.
  3. Spandana, who originally hailed from Nagarjuna Colony in Naspur in Telangana’s Mancheryal district, was soon admitted to Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, Illinois, reports Amerika.
  4. Medical experts said she suffered multiple bleeding, broken bones, spinal injuries, bone dislocations, a lacerated liver and other trauma. She is currently being treated in the intensive care unit and remains in a coma.
  5. The incident occurred just months before she was expected to graduate. Her father, Lagishetti Srinivas, said Spandana moved to the United States in early 2025 to pursue higher education and was just months away from completing her degree.

Rajshetty Spandana family seeks help

The heartbreaking news left her family in Telangana unable to react. Srinivas and his wife, Sunisha, said they do not have passports or U.S. visas and lack the financial means to travel to the United States to be with their daughter. The family has sought help from government officials to obtain emergency travel documents and financial assistance, local media reported.

In a letter, a trauma surgeon at Lutheran General Hospital reportedly called on authorities to expedite the visa approval process for Spandana’s parents to allow them to visit her at this critical time.

Community members and friends launched a fundraising campaign to help pay for the mounting medical and travel costs. As of Monday, a GoFundMe campaign started by supporters had raised more than $253,314.

“Her injuries were heartbreaking. She suffered a traumatic brain injury, including bleeding around her brain, a severe brain contusion, a skull fracture, and damage to the blood vessels that supply her brain. Several ribs were broken, causing partial collapse of both lungs and requiring the emergency placement of chest tubes. The impact also caused injuries to her liver and spleen, internal bleeding, fractures throughout her spine and lower back, and multiple fractures to her pelvis. She remains unconscious while doctors continue to work toward her recovery,” her page states.

“Unfortunately, her medical bills are not covered by insurance, and her intensive care costs continue to increase every day. Her family faces an enormous financial burden during this heartbreaking time. Her parents in India are desperately trying to travel to the United States to be with their daughter while dealing with the financial challenges of this sudden tragedy.”
