The development comes just months before Luigi Mangione goes on trial for the high-profile murder.Johns Hopkins University’s competitive fellowship is considered one of the most popular programs in American medicine, and aspiring cardiologists can spend years earning the degree.Johns Hopkins University confirmed Maria Santa’s appointment in a recent social media post. Around the same time, she also restored her LinkedIn profile. It was a rare public move by a member of the Mangione family, which has been out of the public eye since Luigi’s arrest in December 2024.They are a contrast in the lives of siblings.Luigi, 28, remains jailed in Brooklyn awaiting trial. Maria Santa is preparing to continue a distinguished career in medicine and scientific research.MariaSanta’s sister, Lucia Mangione Giulio, 34, continues to live in Baltimore, where she works as an artist. She married Paolo Giulio in June 2022.The Mangione family has remained largely silent since Luigi’s arrest. Their only public statement said they were “shocked and appalled” by the accusations.Brian Thompson’s family also said they wanted to “keep Brian Thompson’s family in your prayers and we ask that people keep everyone involved in their prayers.”Luigi Mangione is accused of fatally shooting Thompson, a 59-year-old father of two, outside the Manhattan Hilton City Center hotel during a UnitedHealthcare conference. He planned the attack in advance and his writings were found as evidence after his arrest.Mangione wrote in October 2024 that he wanted to “smash” the CEO of a health insurance company. Thompson was killed about six weeks later.Luigi wrote in his diary: “I finally feel confident about what I am going to do. The details are gradually being perfected.”“I don’t have any doubts about whether this was correct/reasonable. It checks every box.”Bullets recovered after the shootings were marked with the words “delay,” “deny” and “destroy,” phrases that cited criticism of the health insurance industry.Mangione also scored a partial legal victory in May, when a judge excluded some evidence found during his arrest. However, jurors were still able to view his declaration and a 9 mm ghost gun linked to the crime. In a separate federal case, multiple charges, including murder with a firearm, were dismissed. The ruling means Mangione no longer faces the possibility of the death penalty. He still faces two counts of interstate stalking, each carrying severe penalties.During a previous court appearance, Mangione protested and shouted: “One plus one equals two. It’s the same trial twice. It’s double jeopardy by any common-sense definition.”
