Mitul Patel: This is what the court documents say

According to court records, the conspirators planned to carry out armed robberies at various convenience stores, liquor stores and restaurants throughout Massachusetts and beyond. The purpose of these incidents was to portray store clerks as victims of violent crimes, thereby enabling them to submit immigration applications based on false statements.

Federal authorities said those involved would stage fictitious robberies in which a person pretending to be a robber would steal cash from store registers while wielding what appeared to be a gun. Surveillance video captures these incidents, after which the alleged victims will notify law enforcement and later use the reports to support their immigration applications.

Prosecutors claim patel Acted as one of the presumed victims of a staged robbery and subsequently sought an immigration advantage based on fabricated events. His guilty plea represents the latest development in a broader federal investigation into the operation.

Federal investigation and Rambhai Patel

The matter stems from an investigation that led to charges against 11 Indian nationals suspected of being involved in the conspiracy. In April, a federal grand jury indicted 10 Indian citizens on conspiracy charges related to the elaborate robbery. Authorities say several of the defendants are living in the United States illegally and one has been deported to India.

Federal investigators said the plot was orchestrated by Rambhai Patel, who was charged in 2023 and later convicted. Another person involved, Balwinder Singh, acted as the getaway driver in several incidents.

What is the U visa program?

The U visa program was created to incentivize victims of serious crimes to assist law enforcement without having to worry about immigration. Fraudulent activity like the one uncovered in Massachusetts undermines the program’s intent and takes resources away from genuine applicants.

Patel and his verdict

patel Sentencing is expected on July 29. Conspiracy to commit visa fraud carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, supervised release, a $250,000 fine, and the possibility of deportation after serving time.
