About shooting

One person was killed and five others were injured Thursday in a shootout between two groups at the Mall of Louisiana in Baton Rouge. The incident occurred at around 1:22 p.m. near the mall food court.

“This was not a random act. This was a disagreement and a fight between two different groups that we are still trying to resolve,” said Baton Rouge Police Chief Thomas Morse Jr. “Unfortunately, an innocent victim was killed in the crossfire.”

Martha Elizabeth Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School, was identified as the victim of the shooting.

The coroner’s office ruled her death a homicide, confirming she died from a gunshot wound to the chest. Officials offer their condolences to her family and friends.

In a statement posted on Facebook, Ascension Episcopal School expressed its condolences on her death.

“Today, our hearts are heavy.

We are saddened by the loss of a senior, Marsha Odom, following yesterday’s off-campus tragedy. We continue to pray for the two students who are recovering, as well as the two other students who were present.

Ascension Episcopal School carries this cross together—we embrace each other with great faith and love.

Martha is remembered by her classmates, Ascension teachers, and our Blue Alligator family as a joyful being whose kindness and contagious enthusiasm brought light to all who knew her.

In our sorrow, we are reminded: “The Lord is near to the brokenhearted, and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

We are deeply grateful for the outpouring of support from all directions. Our priority right now is caring for the hearts and minds of our students, families, and staff.

We ask that you all continue to pray—for healing, for peace, and for the strength of each other to move forward. “
