North Dakota Democratic Nonpartisan Alliance releases statement

“We are completely heartbroken and saddened by the passing of Rep. Liz Comey. Her passing is a huge loss for our state,” the party said in a post on X.

Brooklyn Park Police Inspector Matt Rabe said police responded to a report of a small plane crash at 11:51 a.m. and found a plane crashed and burst into flames shortly after takeoff in a park in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

Rabe said the plane crashed shortly after takeoff. He did not disclose the number of people on board. However, the Federal Aviation Administration confirmed in a statement that two people were on board the plane.

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board announced that it is investigating the crash of a Beech F33A aircraft and investigators are expected to arrive at the scene soon.

Tributes are pouring in

Meanwhile, North Dakota Gov. Kelly Armstrong paid tribute to Comey’s family, friends and fellow lawmakers on Saturday.

“From her service in the Legislature and the state Human Trafficking Commission to her work on education, habitat and immigration, Liz served her state and community with care and compassion,” Armstrong said in a statement.

House Minority Leader Zac Ista, D-Grand Forks, said he was “completely shocked” by her death.

“She lived life to the fullest and never shied away from taking risks or speaking her mind — often in refreshingly direct language,” Istad said in a statement. “As a legislator, she championed public education, the environment and transparency.”
