Who is Antoine Forest? One of 2 Air Canada pilots killed in LaGuardia crash identified

One of the pilots killed in the Air Canada crash at New York’s LaGuardia Airport has been identified as Antoine Forest, a 30-year-old pilot just starting his career.Forest was one of two people killed in a crash late Sunday night that also injured dozens of passengers and crew in what authorities called a major aviation accident.

Young pilot at the beginning of his career

Forest previously worked for Jazz Aviation, which operates regional flights under the Air Canada Express brand. He was a crew member on Flight 8646, which took off from Montreal and was attempting to land when the crash occurred.Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Bryan Bedford described the loss:“These are two young guys who were just starting their careers, so it’s absolutely a tragedy.”The Airline Pilots Association also expressed condolences, calling the deaths of the two pilots a “profound tragedy” and praising their dedication to passenger safety.

What happened at LaGuardia Airport

The accident occurred late Sunday night at New York’s LaGuardia Airport when an Air Canada Express CRJ-900 aircraft collided with a fire truck on the runway.According to officials, both the aircraft and the emergency vehicle received clearance from air traffic control, which put them on a collision course. The plane, carrying 72 passengers and four crew members, hit the truck while landing. The impact killed two pilots and injured dozens of people on board, as well as two Port Authority workers on the ground. An explosion of equipment inside the plane added to the chaos, and images from the scene showed the plane was severely damaged on the runway.

Injury and emergency response

About 40 people were taken to hospital, most with minor injuries, and many had been discharged by Monday morning. However, some people, including emergency responders, were seriously injured.Firefighters and emergency services rushed to the scene and multiple units were deployed to control the situation and assist passengers.

Investigation is ongoing

Authorities including the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have launched a full investigation into the crash.Preliminary evidence, including air traffic control audio, suggests confusion at the runway clearance may have been one of them. Experts say communication between controllers and ground vehicles will be a focus.Aviation experts point out that such incidents are often caused by multiple factors rather than a single cause.

Industry under scrutiny

The crash comes as the U.S. aviation system faces growing pressures, including a shortage of air traffic controllers and broader safety concerns. The incident also caused the temporary closure of LaGuardia Airport, triggering widespread flight cancellations and delays.Forest’s death has been mourned across the aviation industry, with colleagues remembering him as a committed professional whose life and career were tragically cut short.
