Who is Amit Mehta? Indian-American judge at center of Trump immunity case related to January 6 attacks

Amit Mehta is an Indian-American judge who serves on the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. In 2014, he was nominated by Barack Obama and confirmed by the U.S. Senate the same year.Mehta was born in Patan in 1971 and moved to the United States as a child. He attended Georgetown University and later earned his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. Before becoming a judge, he worked as a public defender and later as a partner at a Washington, D.C., law firmJudge Mehta has handled several high-profile cases, but he has recently drawn attention for his role in litigation related to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol. In these cases, plaintiffs seek to retain Donald Trump Bear legal responsibility for their actions and remarks related to the events of that day.A key legal issue in the lawsuits is whether Trump is protected by presidential immunity. This doctrine protects current or former presidents from certain lawsuits arising out of the performance of their official duties. Judge Mehta ruled that Trump’s conduct alleged in the lawsuit is subject to court review and is not automatically protected by immunity at this stage. His ruling did not determine Trump’s ultimate liability but allowed the civil case to move forward. The decision is considered significant because it addresses limits on presidential immunity in cases involving alleged sedition or unofficial conduct. Mehta continues to preside over related proceedings, which remain part of ongoing legal efforts to examine responsibility for the January 6 incident.
