Matt is the eldest son of Billy and Ami Brown and grew up with six siblings who also appear on the show.

The Browns’ unconventional lifestyle became the focus of a Discovery Channel reality show that premiered in 2014 and followed their lives largely off the grid.

Billy Brown served as the family patriarch until his death in February 2021 at the age of 68. Ami Brown continued to appear on the show and remained a central figure in the family after her husband’s death.

All of the siblings appeared on Alaskan Bush People during the show’s run, although Matt was less involved in later episodes as he dealt with personal struggles, including substance abuse issues.

The family remained in the public eye for years as viewers followed their lives in Alaska and later Washington state.

According to Bell, Matt had struggled with alcohol and drug addiction Over the years, he himself chose to become estranged from his relatives. “He wanted nothing to do with this family,” Bell said in a recent social media video discussing his brother’s death.

Bell also revealed that their brother, Noah Brown, was present when authorities pulled Matt’s body from the river and helped identify him.

Matt appeared in the early seasons of Alaskan Bush People and even after later stepping out of the spotlight, he remained a well-known figure among fans of the show.
