An explosion in a building believed to be storing mining explosives in northeastern Myanmar killed more than 45 people and injured about 70 others on Sunday, the Associated Press reported, citing rescuers and local media. The explosion occurred around noon in Kaungtup Village, Namhkam Township, about 3 kilometers south of the Chinese border. The area is controlled by the Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), an ethnic armed group fighting Myanmar’s military-led government. It’s unclear what caused the explosion. However, the building had reportedly been storing explosives used in mining activities.A rescue worker involved in the operation told The Associated Press that as of Sunday evening, 46 bodies, including six children, had been found and cremated. The rescuer, who spoke on condition of anonymity for safety reasons, said 74 injured people had been sent to rural hospitals and rescue efforts were continuing.Another rescue worker in Namhkam, who asked not to be named, said the explosion had killed about 40 people and damaged more than 100 houses near the scene.
