“Today we remember a legend” the white house wrote. “On this day in history, Harambe will celebrate another birthday. He was an icon who became part of the history of the internet, American culture, and the timeline of an entire generation. Tomorrow marks 10 years since we lost him. It will be 10 years since the moment the world stopped scrolling and collectively mourned something bigger than a meme.”

“He became a symbol of loyalty, strength, chaos, unity and the strange beauty of the internet, bringing millions of people together with one goal: to never forget Harambe. Everyone remembers where they were when they heard the news. Somehow, ten years later, his legacy lives on. Gone but never forgotten. Rest in peace, a true patriot,” it continued, adding, “Forever in our hearts.”

Harambe was shot dead Cincinnati Zoo On May 28, 2016, in order to save a four-year-old boy who fell into the gorilla habitat. Witnesses recorded the moment the giant gorilla dragged the child’s prone body across a creek inside the exhibit.

Zoo staff initially tried to order Harambe to retreat. However, when the gorilla refused, they shot and killed it.

White House post mocked

Netizens mocked the White House post in the comments section of the post.

“What on God’s green earth is going on… I’m from Cincinnati. I was at the zoo a few days before Harambe was euthanized. This is the craziest thing I’ve ever seen – and I say this as a three-time Trump voter. Someone told a communications intern to log off. This is inappropriate in the White House. Harambe was going to kill an autistic child and the people who loved him had to euthanize him… He was not a joke in our city and neither was this innocent child,” one user commented. “I don’t think people are getting the most out of it here, they didn’t post about George Floyd, but they did post about an ape…around the same date of death. You guys really have to put 2 and 2 together or you’ll forget how to be angry. Totally beyond your imagination!” wrote another.

What a lame asshole when the White House tries to make memes for people they like. So sad,” one user wrote, while another said, “RIP Harambe, he was senselessly killed by a Tomahawk missile…oh wait, that’s 120 students in Minab. Glad you paid the appropriate tribute. “

“Omg this is so embarrassing. He was euthanized for assaulting an autistic child. This account is proof that the prison is being run by inmates,” one user wrote, while another said, “Who is handling this account? We had the White House remember Harambe before GTA 6!” One user wrote: “Posts like this from the real White House give me the impression that consensus reality is outdated.”
