White House Incident: ‘I didn’t make it easy for them’: Trump recounts tense moments after shooting during White House dinner

Gunfire erupted in a basement ballroom at the Washington Hilton hotel where the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner was being held, sparking chaos and prompting a swift security response.President of the United States Donald Trump He described his desire to see what happened after Secret Service agents kicked him out of the venue Saturday night after a gunman opened fire.Asked about his concerns after hearing the gunshots, Trump said he was “not worried.” “I understand life. We live in a crazy world,” he said. The US president said his curiosity to witness the incident for himself could slow Secret Service efforts to quickly move him to a safe location.“I wanted to see what was going on. I didn’t make it easy for them. I wanted to see what was going on. That’s when we started to realize that this could be a bad problem, a different type of problem, a bad problem – and different from the normal noise in a ballroom,” he said.“I’m surrounded by great people. I probably asked them to move a little slower. I said, ‘Wait a minute, wait a minute,'” the president recalled, adding that Secret Service agents repeatedly urged him to get on the floor as they escorted him off the podium.“I started walking. They said, ‘Please get down, please get down on the floor.’ So I fell down and so did the first lady,” Trump said.A California man has been accused of breaking into a dinner party attended by President Donald Trump in what officials said was a shocking attack at a Washington hotel.Administration officials said the suspects in Saturday night’s incident appeared to be targeting Trump and other senior figures at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, in what would be the third murder of the president in the past two years. The suspect was taken into custody at the scene after a brief exchange of gunfire with agents.Trump later shared photos showing the suspect handcuffed and lying face down and shirtless on a carpeted hotel floor.Trump told a hastily arranged late-night news conference at the White House that he initially mistook the sound for a falling pallet and later realized it was gunshots. He added that he hoped the annual gala hosted by the White House Correspondents’ Association could be rescheduled within a month, calling the hotel venue “not a particularly secure” facility amid growing questions about the president’s security protocols.
