Trump’s new 50% tariffs on some Canadian goods have taken effect, which could make several products more expensive for Americans. The tariffs started at 12:01 a.m. Saturday after US-Canada trade talks broke down.
The Trump administration had threatened the 50% tariffs on a wide range of Canadian products. Trump first announced the new tariffs last month, saying they were needed to “offset Canadian discrimination”, according to Business Insider. US consumers could feel the impact through higher prices if American companies pass the higher import costs on to shoppers.
Canadian whisky and alcohol
One product that could be affected is Canadian whisky. Popular brands such as Crown Royal, Canadian Club and Black Velvet are made in Canada and could face the new tariffs. Crystal Head Vodka, known for its skull-shaped bottle, is also made in Canada and could be affected by the tariffs.
Fireball Cinnamon Whisky could also be indirectly affected. Fireball is a US product, but it is made using Canadian whisky. This means higher costs for Canadian whisky could raise costs for the US-made drink.
The new tariffs also cover beer and wine from Canada, meaning some Canadian alcoholic drinks sold in the US could become more expensive. The trade fight over alcohol has already caused tensions between the two countries. After Trump’s earlier tariffs, several Canadian provinces removed American-made alcohol from store shelves.
Hockey equipment
Hockey equipment is also on the affected list, including hockey sticks and gloves. This could matter for American consumers who buy Canadian-made hockey gear. Canadian hockey brands including Bauer Hockey, CCM Hockey and Sherwood could be affected, but not every product from these companies will necessarily face the tariff, according to Business Insider.

Some Canadian hockey brands make their products outside Canada, including in countries such as China and Vietnam. Those products may not be covered by the new Canada-specific tariffs. Some wooden hockey sticks made by Sherwood in Canada could be affected, according to the company.
Dairy and motorcycles
Dairy products are another major category on the list. The affected products include milk, cream and powdered dairy products. Cheese is notably not included on the tariff list. However, Trump said Canada’s treatment of US-made cheese was one of the issues behind his decision to impose the tariffs. Motorcycles are also among the products that could face higher costs. This means some Canadian motorcycles sold in the US could become more expensive.
Honey, clothing, essential oils, pets etc
Honey imported from Canada could also be affected, potentially increasing the cost of some Canadian honey products for US shoppers. Clothing is included in the tariff list, meaning some Canadian-made clothes could cost more in the US if importers pass the additional cost to consumers. Plants are also covered by the tariffs, so some Canadian plants and related products imported into the US could see higher prices.

Essential oils are included as well, adding another consumer product category that could face higher import costs. Dog leashes are among the other products on the list, meaning some Canadian-made pet products could also become more expensive. Construction materials could be hit by the tariffs, potentially raising costs for some products used in building and construction.
Paper products are also included. This could affect some Canadian paper goods sold in the US. Smartphones are another product category listed under the new tariffs, meaning some Canadian-made or Canada-sourced smartphone products could face higher costs.
Canada hits back
The tariff list is much larger than just alcohol, dairy and hockey equipment. It also covers products across areas such as agriculture, clothing, construction, electronics and other consumer goods. Canada is responding with its own tariffs on US products. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs on American imports, according to Business Insider.
Canada’s counter-tariffs will cover industries including dairy, steel, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper and electronics, Carney said at a press conference in Ottawa. Carney said Canada was taking the step reluctantly and warned that the tariffs would raise costs and reduce choices for Canadians.
US-Canada trade talks
The latest tariffs came after US-Canada trade talks collapsed Friday night. US and Canadian officials had spent the week trying to reach a deal to avoid the new tariffs. Trump had earlier said a trade deal with Canada was close. However, Carney said the US made last-minute changes that Canada considered unfair. Carney announced just before midnight Friday that Canada was suspending the trade negotiations, according to Business Insider.
The latest move is part of a larger trade dispute between the US and Canada. Trump first imposed new tariffs on Canadian goods in early 2025, and Canada responded with tariffs on US products. The latest round means American shoppers could see higher prices on a wide range of Canadian goods, especially if businesses pass the added tariff costs down to consumers.
