White House Correspondents Association (WHCA) and White House Officials made safety their top priority for the second edition of the event, which was postponed from its original date after the attack. Attendance reportedly dropped from nearly 2,600 people at the April gathering to about 700 as organizers introduced additional screening procedures at the Waldorf Astoria.

However, the US “Mirror” said that some security measures still cause concern.

Attendees of the rescheduled event were reportedly required to present QR codes, passwords and identification at multiple checkpoints before entering the ballroom. Guests also undergo TSA-style security checks, and armed police are stationed near the entry point.

Despite the tighter arrangements, the report questions whether the system is too reliant on technology. It noted that digital passes could cause problems if a guest’s phone battery dies, the device is lost or the QR code is inaccessible prior to entry.

It also raised concerns about the lack of visible protective barriers around the main table where President Trump and other top officials sit.

Earlier safety issues at WHCD drew criticism

Security arrangements for this year’s first White House Correspondents’ Dinner have already been criticized. The US “Mirror” previously reported that attendees could enter with a simple card ticket and claimed that identity verification measures were limited.

A Fox News reporter also criticized security at an earlier event in a post on X. “The first external security for me was on the street outside the hotel. I showed my ticket and was waved through within a second.”

The journalist added: “My name was not checked against any list, I was not shown ID, was not searched or went through a metal detector.”

Security review continues after Trump assassination attempt

The new questions surrounding WHCD’s security come after Trump’s assassination earlier this year heightened concerns about protection protocols at high-profile political events.

While the rescheduled dinner introduced additional screening measures and reduced attendance, questions remain about whether the combination of digital checks and physical security measures will be enough to protect senior officials and journalists gathered in the same venue.

HT.com cannot independently verify these claims.

The Secret Service and WHCA have not publicly responded to specific questions.
