Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos said recently Nancy Guthrie Case “It’s unlike anything we’ve seen in Tucson in years.” Breakthroughs can happen at any time, he added, but a “real breakthrough” is when “someone knows something, and maybe somewhere, someone will say something.”
Experts also believe that while Guthrie’s case has many similarities to other missing persons cases, many details of Nancy’s case are unique, from the age of the victim to her celebrity daughter Savannah Guthrie.
Why the Nancy Guthrie case is so unique
Jesse Golias, a forensic anthropologist at Mississippi State University, said the circumstances of Nancy’s case were “pretty shocking,” NPR reported.
“Typically you hear about smaller children, teenagers who go missing” and attract national media attention, Goliath said.
“But there’s an old woman who’s missing [a daughter] What you see on TV every day” is extraordinary, he added.

However, high-profile kidnappings are rare, said Tara Kennedy, a media representative for the DoE Network, a volunteer organization dedicated to identifying missing and unidentified people.

“I can’t remember the last time I heard about a blackmail case outside of Guthrie,” said Kennedy, who has worked with the Doe Network since 2014. “I always associated them with different times in American history, like the Lindbergh kidnapping, rather than with someone’s mother on the Today Show.”
Both Kennedy and Goliath described Nancy’s case as “bizarre.”
It is rare for people in their 80s to be kidnapped
FBI crime data According to reports, of the approximately 240,000 kidnapping cases in the United States from June 2020 to June 2025, female victims accounted for more than 75%. However, only 646 of them were women in their 80s, accounting for less than 0.2% of all victims. Nancy is 84 years old.
The age group with the largest number of victims that year was 20-29 years old. They account for only 30% of victims.
Other abnormal situations
There are several other highly unusual circumstances surrounding the Guthrie case. They include alleged ransom notes sent to the media demanding millions of dollars, as well as chilling footage of masked gunmen approaching Nancy’s front door before she disappeared.

All of these circumstances combined, Goliath said, to create a scene straight out of a true crime novel. “That’s unheard of,” he added.
“The Silent Crisis”
Goliath said all missing persons cases, not just Nancy’s, need to be disseminated and shared widely. This increases the chance of bringing someone home safely.

“We call this a silent crisis,” he said. “There are missing people across the United States and their cases really don’t have the same social media representation or national media representation.”
A patchwork of rules and resources reportedly makes it difficult to find standardized data on missing people. For example, law enforcement agencies across the United States are required to report missing persons cases to the federal government only if they involve minors.
Apart from National Crime Information Center (NCIC), missing persons data is collected by house (National Missing and Unidentified Persons System), which is also accessible to the public. However, only 16 states require mandatory reporting of missing persons cases to the NamUs Clearinghouse.
Goliath said it would be great if more states adopted NamU’s requirements. NPR previously reported that a large portion of police agencies in the United States are not included in the system.
“It helps because it’s already a system that exists,” Goliath said. “Law enforcement is already doing this. So, let’s make NamU available to all states.”
Nancy was last seen just before 10pm on January 31, when she had dinner with her daughter Anne and her son-in-law Tommaso Scioni. A suspect in her disappearance has not yet been named.
