What is the Abraham Accords? Everything you need to know as Trump pushes Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Pakistan and others to join

as president donald trump Calls on several Muslim-majority countries to join Abraham Accordsthe word is back in global headlines. But what exactly are these agreements? Why are they so important?

As negotiations with Iran continue, Trump is pushing for more countries to join the Abraham Accords.

What are the main objectives of the Abraham Accords?

According to the official statement of the Abraham Accordsthese agreements are based on the belief that world peace middle East This is best achieved through cooperation and mutual respect rather than hostility. The declaration states that the signatories “recognize the importance of preserving and strengthening peace in the Middle East and around the world, based on mutual understanding and coexistence and respect for human dignity and freedom, including religious freedom.”

The name itself comes from Abraham, the co-patriarch of the three Abrahamic religions (Islam, Christianity and Judaism). The official declaration calls for “efforts to promote interreligious and intercultural dialogue in order to promote a culture of peace among the three Abrahamic religions and all humanity.”

Beyond diplomacy, the deal carries broader ambitions. The official text calls for an end to radicalization, support for science, the arts, medicine and commerce, and to give children “a better future.” As the official statement states, the signatories “pursue a vision of peace, security and prosperity in the Middle East and around the world.”

At the most practical level, the agreement is about Arab states formally recognizing Israel and establishing diplomatic relations with it.

Who has signed on, and who does Trump want next?

The Abraham Accords were originally brokered by Trump during his first term in the White House. according to ReutersThe UAE and Bahrain signed in 2020, breaking a long-standing taboo and becoming the first Arab country in 25 years to officially recognize Israel. Morocco and Sudan follow.

Now, in his second term, Trump is pushing hard to expand the agreement. He has asked Saudi Arabia, Qatar, PakistanTürkiye, Egypt and Jordan immediately joined. Trump posted on “Truth Social”: “I will force all countries to sign the Abraham Accords immediately. If Iran signs an agreement with me, as the president of Iran, I will force all countries to sign the Abraham Accords immediately. USA As a member of the United States, it would be an honor to have them also be a part of this unparalleled world alliance. “

So far, the response hasn’t been great. Pakistan flatly rejected the offer, with a Pakistani security source saying: “Pakistan is not obliged to comply with any such demand.” According to Reuters, Egypt, Jordan and Turkey already maintain certain diplomatic relations with Israel, although these relations have been severely strained since the outbreak of the Gaza war.

The situation in Saudi Arabia is the most complex of them all. The kingdom, the birthplace of Islam and guardian of its two holy sites, Mecca and Medina, has long insisted it would not sign the deal unless there was a clear road map to Palestinian statehood, Reuters reported. For Riyadh, this goes far beyond a simple diplomatic decision. This is a very sensitive national, religious and political issue.

Trump linked the expansion of the Abraham Accords to ongoing Iran negotiations, telling reporters that talks were “going very well” but that no deal had been reached. Senator Lindsey Graham called the joint strategy “profound for the region and the world,” Reuters reported.
