The concept of tanning comes from the “looksmaxxing” self-improvement movement, which inspires people to go to extremes to achieve the deepest possible tan. This includes scheduling sunbaths during peak UV periods, using sunbeds, prolonged exposure to the sun, neglecting sun protection, and applying tanning-boosting oils while tanning.

Social media users coined the term “taxmaxxing” to capture their pursuit of the ideal summer glow, while dermatologist Call it “sun damage disguised as a beauty trick.”

Dr. Silvina Pugliese warns against tanmaxing trend

Jessica Saggio, a nurse from Long Island, told News 12 she has previously done the behaviors social media users are now promoting, including prolonged sunbathing and applying tanning oil to enhance her skin tone.

However, she told the outlet that her medical school education prompted her to reconsider the dangers associated with UV damage and the negative effects of her previous habits.

“I went to nursing school and I thought, wait a minute. I should protect my skin,” she said.

“I would do the same thing they would do,” Sagio said of tanmaxxing. “I do enjoy tanning and being in the sun, but unfortunately not everyone has the same skin type.”

American skin cancer

Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, affecting one in five people American throughout their lives.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, experiencing five or more sunburns of any intensity doubles your risk of developing the disease. The sun’s ultraviolet rays can cause damage to skin cells and cause DNA mutations, which can lead to cancer.

However, skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancer, and most cases can be avoided with proper skin protection.

The AAD recommends minimizing prolonged sun exposure during peak hours (especially 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.)

To protect your skin, AAD dermatologists also recommend seeking shade and wearing sun-protective clothing, such as hats and clothing made from UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) fabric.
