West Bountiful evacuation order: Utah man arrested

Law enforcement has detained a Utah man after they found explosives near a 2,500-gallon diesel tank at his residence, ABC4 reported.

Dwayne Raymond Hughes, 80, faces multiple charges, including one count of possession of explosives (a second-degree felony), one count of unlawful possession of fireworks (a class B misdemeanor) and one count of reckless endangerment (a class A misdemeanor).

According to court records, on April 25, police were dispatched to a West Bountiful home in response to a domestic violence incident involving the homeowner and her son. During his son’s arrest, he told an officer that his father, Dwayne Raymond Hughes, found explosives on his property.

After his son was booked into jail, the officer moved back into Hughes’ residence. He showed officers a container containing explosives located next to a 2,500-gallon diesel tank. In addition, an empty box with an explosive placard and some fireworks were found in the yard.

During the course of the investigation, officials discovered that the explosives were manufactured in the 1980s and may have been stored on Hughes’ property for an unspecified period of time without the necessary authorization.

Police have not confirmed whether the incident was related to the evacuation.

Hughes has been booked into the Davis County Jail, where he is being held without bail.
