The incident attracted widespread attention online after local media CBS 8 reported that the homeowner of the so-called “Trump House” was seriously injured in the attack.

The man’s wife said she believed the attack stemmed from the couple’s outspoken political support for President Trump and the abundance of decorations displayed outside their home.

The Escondido home has become a local landmark because of prominent Trump banners and political messages visible from the street.

What happened to the owner of “Trump House”?

Kerry Sheron, 69, was reportedly attacked in Escondido Wednesday afternoon and suffered serious injuries. The incident also reportedly left a bystander injured after the person stepped in to help.

The victim’s wife, Maria, said her husband, Kerry, who described himself as a military veteran, was attacked while working on his truck outside their home. He was seriously injured, according to police.

Escondido police discovered the critically injured elderly man after responding to a report of an assault charge near East Mission Avenue and Buchanan Street at 2:14 p.m. Wednesday.

However, the suspect fled the scene on foot before authorities arrived. Police located a suspect matching his description a few blocks away near East Mission and Crabapple and identified him as Thomas Caleb Butler.

Kerry Sherron under attack for political reasons?

Maria reportedly said her family had previously experienced verbal conflicts and hostility over political decorations outside their home. According to Krishelen’s wife, a political demonstration the couple held outside their home may have been the catalyst for the attack.

She said: “They don’t like the flags. I don’t know why. I support America. My husband is [a] veteran. You know, he tried to kill my husband. It’s terrible. I don’t know what kind of hatred…what kind of heart, black heart,” according to CBS8.

Butler, who is from nearby Sherron, “likes” the house and supports the president, the California Post reported Donald Trump As a registered Republican. Butler was unemployed and battling demons after years in the Navy, the outlet reported.

Butler was receiving medication but still faced debilitating mental health issues, according to family friends. Butler was charged with attempted first-degree murder. His arraignment is scheduled for Friday at 1:30 p.m. in the North County Courthouse
