Indiana Rep. Jim Baird’s wife, Denise, died early Sunday due to “complications” from more than a dozen fractures she suffered in a hit-and-run crash in early January.

Baird’s office released a heartbreaking statement confirming Dennis’ death on Sunday morning.
“Congressman Baird and Denise were married for 59 years and built a life centered on faith, family and service. A devoted wife and loving mother of three children, she was the foundation of their family and will be deeply missed,” Baird’s office wrote. “We ask that you keep the Congressman and his family in your prayers during this difficult time.”
The couple, known as a “high school sweetheart,” had three children, as described in a biography on the Republican congressional office website.

The couple were rushed to hospital after the tragic accident.
Baird, 80, was discharged from hospital on January 6 but had to wear a neck brace for several weeks. Dennis suffered a shocking “15 fractures” and was released on January 12, their son Beau Baird confirmed in a Facebook post.
