New Delhi: A major clash broke out in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Friday as National Conference (NC) lawmakers protested against the killing of former Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and US-Israeli military action in Iran.Video footage from the congress showed members of the National Council chanting slogans and holding portraits of Khamenei inside the House of Representatives. As tensions escalated between members, police later arrived to restore order. BJP MPs fought back against the protest, leading to a scuffle between Congress MP Irfan Hafiz Lone and BJP MP Yudvir Sethi. Parliamentary proceedings were briefly adjourned to calm the situation. The protest was led by North Carolina leaders who expressed solidarity with Iran. Party MP Tanveer Sadiq said, “We stand with Iran. The entire National Conference and the J&K government stand with them. No country has the right to attack another country and the top leadership of India should condemn this.” Sadiq stressed that the party supports the Iranian people in light of Khamenei’s killing.Earlier, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah condemned the ongoing conflict in West Asia, claiming that regime change cannot be achieved through military bombing. “The only people who can choose the regime are the citizens of the country. Aerial bombardment cannot change the regime,” Abdullah said. He called Khamenei’s killing “a gross abuse of force and a violation of international law.”On February 28, the United States and Israel jointly launched a military strike against Iran, killing Khamenei and several senior leaders of the Islamic Republic, and escalating tensions in the region. Iran retaliated by launching attacks on U.S. bases in the Gulf states and Israel.
