The district headquarters Virudhunagar has become a DMK stronghold in recent years. In the 2021 Assembly elections, DMK’s ARR Seenivasan won by 73,297 votes, defeating the BJP’s G. Pandurangan won by 21,339 votes. In the 2016 Assembly elections, DMK’s ARR Seenivasan won with 65,499 votes, defeating AIADMK’s K. Kalanithi by a slim margin of 2,870 votes. In the 2011 Assembly elections, DMDK’s K. Pandiarajan contested as part of the AIADMK alliance and won by 70,441 votes, defeating INC’s T. Armstrong Naveen by 21,438 votes.
