Veteran diplomat Doraiswamy will be the next ambassador to China

New Delhi: Veteran diplomat and Indian High Commissioner to the UK Vikram Doraiswami will be India’s next ambassador to China. He is a 1992 batch IFS officer and is expected to take fresh appointment soon, the government announced on Thursday.Doraiswamy served as a young diplomat in Beijing from 1996 to 2000 and is said to be fluent in Mandarin. Relations between India and China are increasingly thawed after a deadly military clash in Galwan in eastern Ladakh in June 2020 triggered five years of border hostilities. India eased restrictions on foreign direct investment from China earlier this month amid a general rise in interest on both sides in rebuilding ties. With Doraiswamy’s appointment, India also signals to China that it values managing its steadily improving but complex relationship with Beijing amid growing global uncertainty. Doraiswamy is also considered the right person to handle the possible visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India this year. BRICS Summit. He was the coordinator of the fourth BRICS summit hosted by India in 2012. A major breakthrough came last year when Prime Minister Modi agreed with Xi Jinping that India and China are development partners, not competitors, when he visited Tianjin for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit. The new ambassador will focus on the commitments expressed by the leaders of the two countries and resolve the border issue in a reasonable and mutually acceptable manner from the political perspective of the overall relationship between the two countries and the long-term interests of the two peoples.Doraiswamy has extensive experience in managing some of India’s key relationships, having served as head of the Americas arm of the Multilateral Environmental Agreement, responsible for relations with the United States and Canada. The seasoned diplomat has also served as India’s Ambassador to South Korea and Uzbekistan and High Commissioner to Bangladesh. He has also served in the Indian Mission to the United Nations in New York and has experience as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India.
