Uttarakhand achieves 1 GW of solar capacity, boosting green energy development and local employment

Uttarakhand has crossed a major renewable energy milestone with installed solar capacity exceeding 1 gigawatt (GW). The state’s total installed solar capacity now exceeds 1,027.87 megawatts, underscoring the state’s growing push for clean and sustainable energy.Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said the achievement reflects the Centre’s policy focus on renewable energy under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said that the Prime Minister’s vision is Atmanibal Bharat The emphasis on green energy has encouraged states like Uttarakhand to turn solar energy into a people-centric movement.Dhami said the coordinated implementation of central schemes and state-led initiatives has also provided self-employment opportunities to youth and local entrepreneurs. He expressed confidence that Uttarakhand will further cement its position among India’s leading solar states in the coming years. This milestone was achieved through a series of grid-connected rooftop solar projects, ground-mounted plants, government building installations, agricultural solar pumps, and domestic, commercial and industrial consumer solar programs.Of the total installed capacity, around 397 MW is from ground-mounted projects, 241 MW from rooftop solar installations under PM Surya Ghar scheme, 137 MW from solar installations under Chief Minister’s Solar Self-Operation Scheme, 110 MW from commercial net metering, 51 MW from captive solar plants, 37 MW from canal top and canal bank projects, and 26 MW from solar installations on government buildings.Besides, over 100 MW is currently being installed under the Chief Minister’s Solar Captive Scheme, along with 30 MW from captive solar power plants and 13.5 MW from government buildings. These efforts contribute to reducing carbon emissions, increasing energy self-reliance and creating local jobs. The Uttarakhand Renewable Energy Development Agency (UREDA) has played a key role in driving solar energy adoption across the state by implementing projects, providing technical support, creating awareness and extending solar solutions to remote and mountainous areas.Supportive policies, subsidies, streamlined approval procedures and incentives for private investment have helped accelerate solar growth, officials said. As part of its long-term sustainability goals, the State Government has set further targets to expand solar power generation, deepen promotion in remote areas and promote public engagement.
