Powerful level 6.9 earthquake Northern Chile was hit on Monday (local time), according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The earthquake occurred in the Atacama Desert, about 31 kilometers away from the town of Calama, with a focal depth of nearly 100 kilometers. There were no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage. Chile is one of the most seismically active countries in the world, with frequent strong earthquakes due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire.”
