US shootings: Brawl near University of Iowa, 3 students injured

At least three students were injured in a shooting early Sunday morning near the University of Iowa, according to police.The Iowa City Police Department responded to the 100 block of East College Street in downtown Iowa City at around 1.46 a.m. local time following reports of a large fight. Police arriving at the scene heard gunshots.The circumstances surrounding the altercation remain unclear. Video circulating on social media appeared to show a confrontation involving a large group of people, with some punching and kicking others and bystanders urging them to stop. Additional video showed a large crowd fleeing the scene after the shooting.First responders reported at least four people with gunshot wounds, according to scanner traffic records provided by Broadcastify, NBC News reported. Police said multiple victims were taken to local hospitals but did not confirm the total number of injuries.A spokesman for the University of Iowa Health Care confirmed that the patients involved in the incident had been admitted and were being evaluated, but did not provide an update on their conditions.University of Iowa President Barbara Wilson confirmed in a statement that three students were injured. The university also issued an alert urging people to avoid the area. “As we wait for more information, my thoughts are with these students, their families, friends and everyone who cares about them,” Wilson said. “I am keeping them and everyone in our community who is hurting or shocked right now in my thoughts.No arrests have been made and police are asking anyone with information to contact the department. The investigation is ongoing.“This senseless act of violence devastates the university community and our state,” said Kim Reynolds, who offered all of the state’s resources to assist with the investigation.
