US says it will intercept, divert or seize ships leaving Iran

The United States fleshed out plans to block Iranian ports and issued a notice saying it could seize ships that violate the measures.

Iran has said it would target all ports in and around the Persian Gulf if its own shipping centers were threatened. (AFP)

In a notice seen by Bloomberg, the United States reiterated that the measures would begin at 3 p.m. London time. Neutral ships in Iranian waters must leave before then or they will be “intercepted, diverted and captured.”

After Pakistan peace talks collapsed over the weekend, President Donald Trump Says the U.S. will block Strait of Hormuzthe world’s most important energy chokepoint. That threatens to cut off a vital financial lifeline for Tehran, whose oil exports have been largely unaffected since the war broke out in late February.

Iran says it will target all ports in and near Iran persian gulf If its own shipping hub is threatened, the standoff in the strait, which Tehran controls during much of the conflict, could intensify.

The notice stated that the U.S. blockade would cover Iran’s entire coastline, including the coastline east of the Strait of Hormuz.

It also said it would not block neutral ships from transiting Hormuz if they were traveling to and from non-Iranian destinations. The vessels may still be searched for prohibited cargo.

The United States also said it would allow humanitarian shipments, including food, medical supplies and other items critical to civilian survival, subject to inspections.

When contacted for comment, U.S. Central Command said it had nothing to add to the statement issued Sunday.
